A Deep Dive Into Citrus Containers
Q: What are the key considerations for soil and drainage in citrus containers?
You need a well-draining mix, drill enough drainage holes (including side holes in larger barrels), and ensure the bottom is clear of drainage obstructions; over time, you may need to amend soil with mineral components to improve drainage and aeration.
A Deep Dive Into Citrus Containers
Q: Why is it a good idea when transferring citrus trees from pot to pot, you only go up one size as opposed to jumping to a much larger container?
Going up gradually helps the roots acclimate to the surrounding soil, prevents the pot from staying too wet, and reduces the risk of root rot by allowing time for the tree to establish in the new medium.
Growing Sweet Potatoes
Q: I'm hoping you might address the subject of growing sweet potatoes. This person says, any experience you might have with varieties or tips would be appreciated.
The guest discusses timing (plant slips two months before the final planting window), starting slips indoors in a warm environment, and choosing disease-free slips from certified sources to avoid virus transmission.
Growing Sweet Potatoes
Q: And it all started with a question from a local Master Gardener who wanted to know, well, how exactly do you plant a sweet potato?
The host explains that you start by growing slips from a small sweet potato in warm conditions, then you snap off eight-inch slips to plant in well-prepared soil when the weather is warm enough.
2026 Garden Seed Price Sticker Shock Is Arriving
Q: How do you choose which varieties make it to a retail seed rack?
We trial everything and decide based on what sells well and performs effectively in different climates.
