  • Does Batavia have a solo podcast?

I agree with a prior reviewer that the male’s lack of respect to Batavia is disconcerting and makes listening difficult. ‘Landed here as I was trying podcasts for a good garden listen. Also, his opinion, and experience way out of my growing zone is not as helpful as science. Sadly this is not the podcast for me.

  • Fun gardening advice

Love this podcast and the dynamic between the two hosts. It’s like you’re listening in on a personal conversation between two long time friends who have a shared passion for gardening. They poke fun and egg eachother on at times but are also so beautifully encouraging with each other. The gardening advice is more experience based than research or science based, but it’s relaxed and fun and there’s a place for both in the gardening enthusiast’s podcast lineup. I love this one.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

This is what you need to plant in May
Q: What is it called when one plant benefits another, such as beans fixing nitrogen for corn?
Companion planting, a concept the hosts discuss in depth, noting that while beans fix nitrogen, the practical benefits depend on soil biology and crop rotation rather than a simple one-to-one benefit. They emphasize that true nitrogen release happens after nodules decompose and that intercropping often involves broader planning like rotation and soil nutrients.
10 things to do in your garden in spring
Q: What is the best approach to soil amendments this spring if you're short on time?
Amend the soil now with compost and light pre‑fertilizers while the soil is cool, then monitor and adjust as the season warms, rather than waiting for perfect conditions that may push you back.
The easiest Beginner Friendly crops to grow
Q: Have you grown Brussels sprouts successfully?
The hosts discuss mixed success growing Brussels sprouts, noting long timelines and climate sensitivity; one host admits past struggles but highlights that proper cooler-season timing can improve results, while also acknowledging that pests and disease add to the difficulty.
You have to direct sow these seeds
Q: First year starting seeds question about indoor humidity and plant transpiration.
The hosts discuss that standard indoor humidity (around 30-50%) and typical room temperatures usually aren't the core problem; stunting can happen and is often part of normal seedling growth as roots establish, cotyledons unfold, and true leaves form. They recommend bottom watering to raise humidity locally and emphasize not overreacting to early stunting.
consider this before planting your garden
Q: What advice can you give for someone intimidated by soil blocking?
Start with seed sales as a more forgiving method for seed starting, and consider using soil blocks for an experiment once you're comfortable.
