  • I have a notebook for this podcast now.

There has never been a podcast I have ever had the desire to listen to twice, not even my all time favorite crime podcast. 😆 This podcast upped my garden game and now I am re listening to old episodes and taking notes.

    Things I learned about

Bugs-they aren’t all bad- except for aphids. Those guys are terrible

Water-plants need it, but I need to save it

    Compost

My orchids don’t actually hate me, they just need cooler temps to bloom.

A lot of succulents need seasons

    Being greener

    And sometimes ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

FPGH 236: May To Do List + Listener Q&A
Q: What should I do about pruning and thinning fruiting trees to prevent sunburn?
Prune carefully to avoid exposing too much fruit to the sun; limit pruning to about 30% for fruit trees, ensure good air circulation, and keep inner, shaded areas from sudden sun exposure to prevent burn.
FPGH 236: May To Do List + Listener Q&A
Q: If you have a horsetail in the ground, will it take over?
Horsetail spreads by both rhizomes and spores; in irrigated, regularly watered spaces it can spread, but with no irrigation during dry periods it will retreat. Keeping it contained in pots or tubs reduces spread.
FPGH 236: May To Do List + Listener Q&A
Q: What about ants on artichokes?
Ants often accompany aphids on artichokes; you can tolerate some level of ants if beneficial insects are present, but consider using taro ant baits or physical barriers like Tanglefoot to reduce ant activity while preserving beneficials.
FPGH 236: May To Do List + Listener Q&A
Q: You have any suggestions on how to separate my birds of paradise?
Division is possible for smaller plants; for very large varieties, consider cutting away front portions or removing entire plant sections and regrowing from the back, as digging up the whole root ball is extremely difficult. Expect multiple steps and be prepared to stake or support regrowth.
FPGH 233: April To Do List & Listener Q&A
Q: What could cause a cherry tree to drop blossoms and fail to set fruit, and how can this be mitigated?
Blossoms may not be pollinated, or the tree may need a pollinator variety. Some cherry types are not self-fertile, so planting a compatible pollinator or a three-in-one cherry can help. Also ensure good airflow and watch for fungal issues that can accompany wet conditions.
