  • Get “Bit by the Baptist Bug”

I had the pleasure of meeting Austin McCormick at an in-person module held in Owensboro, KY. Hey used the phrase “bit by the Baptist bug” a few times and now that saying sticks in my mind every time I come to listen to another episode of the Covenant Podcast.

It’s a silly expression that makes me laugh, but it’s a fitting description for this show as these men seek to honor Christ in all they do.

Love this show and love these brothers! Keep up the good work.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

On Hermeneutics with Jared Ebert
Q: What are the primary options in hermeneutics that reform-minded Christians differentiate themselves on?
The main options discussed are the fourfold sense (quadriga), census plenior (fuller sense), and authorial intent with a priority on the literal sense as foundational; the panelists argue for sticking to the literal sense while using typology within that framework and caution against treating allegory as a universal reading mode.
Orthodox Radicals with Matthew Bingham
Q: Could you explain that relationship for our listeners and maybe get into some of the details of how you do so in your book?
The answer emphasizes that the earliest Baptists who rejected paedobaptism largely emerged from Congregationalist circles, and that a purely label-driven view (like “Particular” vs “General” Baptist) wrongly suggests a unified Baptist identity. Instead, Baptistic Congregationalists were Congregationalists who held to credobaptism, and their ties to paedobaptist congregationalists remained strong even as they split over baptism.
Piety in Pastoral Ministry with Joel Beeke
Q: What advice would you give to ministers in a season of dullness or dryness in their spiritual life?
Stay in the means of grace, guard against worldliness, and lean into prayer and Scripture; reorganize your daily duties to keep the main thing the main thing, and cultivate a rhythm where prayer precedes and accompanies every ministry action.
Cessationism with Sam Waldron
Q: How do you reconcile experiences such as dreams or visions brought up by critics with cessationist theology, especially when some report conversions and divine anger-inducing dreams?
Experiences must be judged against the Supreme Judge, Holy Scripture; while God can use dreams providentially to lead people to Christ, such events are not continuing revelation and cannot be equated with the apostolic gifts or the authoritative prophetic office, which have ceased in the Church.
Cessationism with Sam Waldron
Q: Where does the Bible expressly or necessarily teach cessationism, and how would you walk us through the cascade argument arising from that premise?
The Bible teaches cessationism by first grounding the Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, then showing that apostles of Christ were unique, eyewitnesses, and ceased; prophets similarly ceased; tongue-speaking and miracles followed the same logic, all tied to the completion of revelation and the closed canon, which makes ongoing capital miracles unnecessary.
