Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery... more

Great podcast! I’m a 49 year old woman living with CHD, Transposition of The Great Arteries. God Bless the doctors, nurses and most importantly, the patients of the past. It made my day to listen during my daily walk to hear the voice of my favorite pediatric cardiologist, Dr. J. Phillip Saul. Dr. Saul saved my life and I’m forever grateful!

  • Fantastic

This was incredible from start to finish. There are so many podcasts out there who has time for anything that isn’t?! I could listen to Mr. Napoli read an instruction manual. I’m a former nurse in MN, so this resonated with me. But, it’s such a great story that I’m sure most people have never heard. The last episode made me bawl. Bravo, guys!

  • Riveting

This was so engaging. I thought about a child in our very small rural community in the 50s, who underwent a heart surgery for blue baby syndrome (ventricular septal defect). She loved so much longer with the “At the time new” surgery, but died abruptly at the age of seven. I thought of her throughout this podcast, and the other patients that were the basis of all of the advances. God bless each one.
