  • Susan Shelley

I’ve valued this podcast for its informative and balanced approach, but the most recent episode featuring Susan Shelley was disheartening. Her characterization of California’s government struck me as not only excessively cynical but also lacking in nuance. The broad generalizations she presented, such as:

“It’s restricting housing and it’s restricting transportation and it’s restricting development and job-creating businesses can’t operate here. Everybody’s regulated to death and they’re leavin... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What's Really Happening in California Prisons? | Amie Ichikawa
Q: What does the DOJ investigation add to the conversation?
The DOJ investigation foregrounds federal scrutiny of constitutional rights and could drive nationwide policy changes if systemic issues are confirmed.
What's Really Happening in California Prisons? | Amie Ichikawa
Q: What is the main safety concern you've observed in California's female prisons related to the transfer policy?
The main concern is that transferring individuals identified as male to women's facilities without thorough medical, psychological, or risk assessments creates a real threat to women's safety, including sexual assault risks and compounded trauma.
Where California’s Port Trucking Industry Stands Now | Robert Loya
Q: What's the human impact on small, family-owned fleets?
Small fleets faced disproportionate costs due to the need for multiple corporate structures to comply with AB5, higher insurance, and the burden of costly new trucks, often resulting in closures and bankruptcies while larger fleets with more resources could weather the changes better.
Where California’s Port Trucking Industry Stands Now | Robert Loya
Q: Were electrification goals actually feasible for drayage fleets serving ports?
Not at the time of rollout; the duty cycle, charging infrastructure, and weight penalties made widespread zero-emission adoption impractical, leading to waivers being withdrawn and many fleets choosing to delay or avoid full electrification.
Where California’s Port Trucking Industry Stands Now | Robert Loya
Q: What changed in California policy that affected trucking operations the most?
CARB's push toward zero-emission technology, the Advanced Clean Fleet, and the misalignment between available technology, infrastructure, and realistic duty cycles created a drag on operations, pushing some fleets toward retirement or bankruptcy while others prepared for gradual transition.
