  • Great guests, interviewer not so much…

The guest are always great, love hearing them talk. But the interviewer just seems to have the same 6 questions, every interview, and about the same 8 cultural touchpoints over and over again - which is even worse when they’re completely culturally irrelevant to the guest. Too much of the time it comes across as though he hasn’t done his research or homework, which is a huge missed opportunity. Great guest list though…

  • One of my faves

Listening from Australia. Awesome variety of music guests interviewed warmly & enthusiastically. Particularly enjoy the British musicians, acts, producers & stories from or covering the 80s (especially pop/new wave). Thanks for such a great podcast. Is a regular listen for me. David’s ‘yes’ replies, are a keeper, love them.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Richard Langston - The Clean: In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul
Q: What sparked the rise of Flying Nun and the Dunedin scene?
Roger Sheppard's sighting of The Clean and his belief in their potential led him to register Flying Nun, which provided a platform for many Dunedin acts and helped export the sound internationally.
Anne Richmond Boston - The Swimming Pool Q’s
Q: Tell us about finishing The Big House Of Time and the long-lost second album finally seeing the light.
The second album was recorded, then shelved due to money issues and later personal changes. Years later, a friend helped digitize tapes, and I returned to finish the project with a new producer in Athens, creating a fresh release and a new live lineup.
Anne Richmond Boston - The Swimming Pool Q’s
Q: You took a significant step into a solo career after leaving the Qs—what sparked that transition?
A longstanding partnership with Rob Gal, moving to Atlanta, and later reviving material from the DB era led to a solo project. I collaborated heavily with Rob, while also discovering the potential to write and interpret songs in a more personal voice.
Anne Richmond Boston - The Swimming Pool Q’s
Q: How did The Swimming Pool Qs come together and what was your role in the band?
Two friends started the band and invited me to sing, I gradually learned to play a little keyboard, and we built our sound through live gigs on the East Coast with DB Records supporting our early releases.
Anne Richmond Boston - The Swimming Pool Q’s
Q: What were your earliest musical influences and how did they shape your path into music?
I grew up listening to a lot of different music, from the Beatles to local Atlanta scenes, and the 60s energy made me want to sing and perform. I learned lyrics by heart and started singing in church choirs, which set a foundation for stage performance and storytelling.
