I LOVE Bill’s interviewing style. The way he breaks away to provide anecdotes or information in the interviews helps me learn so much.

  • Optimism is a Skill

I have been listening to the Blue Sky podcast from the beginning and have found it uplifting and useful to my everyday life. Something struck me on the Richie Davidson interview as so practical and yet profound, I am writing my first ever podcast review. I shared the podcast w my family and hope to incorporate some of the rituals and ideas into my everyday life. Thank you, Bill Burke, for taking on this mission.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ENCORE PRESENTATION: NYT Bestselling Author Matt Ridley on His Motivation to Write The Rational Optimist and Why He Believes That Human Prosperity Will Inevitably Continue to Increase
Q: As you know, a huge source of existential dread these days is climate change and people's concerns about it. Can you talk about how we address climate change and why you think the optimists will prevail?
I personally think climate change is real and a threat, but not as big a threat as some people say. We should see it as a problem to be solved rather than panicking about it.
ENCORE PRESENTATION: NYT Bestselling Author Matt Ridley on His Motivation to Write The Rational Optimist and Why He Believes That Human Prosperity Will Inevitably Continue to Increase
Q: What's your take on how social media has impacted some of these ideas of yours?
I think the jury is still out on all this. When social media began, I was pretty optimistic about it, but then we went into echo chambers and became polarized.
ENCORE PRESENTATION: NYT Bestselling Author Matt Ridley on His Motivation to Write The Rational Optimist and Why He Believes That Human Prosperity Will Inevitably Continue to Increase
Q: Did you feel like more people need to know this?
It was an evangelical thing, writing the book. I wanted to tell young people in particular, don't listen to people who say it's a terrible world and you're finished.
ENCORE PRESENTATION: NYT Bestselling Author Matt Ridley on His Motivation to Write The Rational Optimist and Why He Believes That Human Prosperity Will Inevitably Continue to Increase
Q: Was it sort of a light bulb moment or was it built up over time? How did you reach that conclusion?
It was pretty gradual. It starts with the pessimism I was steeped in as a young person. In the 1970s, I genuinely thought I faced a world of scarcity, conflict, and poverty.
Amy King's Innovative and Optimistic Approach to Solving Homelessness in America
Q: As you sit here today, are you more or less hopeful about eradicating homelessness?
I believe that with the right services and systemic changes, we can minimize homelessness, moving toward a functional zero, though we cannot eradicate it completely.
