Amidst an unprecedented federal investigation into hundreds of Native Boarding Schools and the 100,000+ children these institutions forcibly removed, one school has become the epicenter of controversy in America’s attempt to reckon with its dark history: Red Cloud Indian School. While today some see the school as a positive presence in the Pine Ridge Reservation, home to the Oglala Lakota tribe, o... more

The air is heavy as Crystal and Lashay arrive at Red Cloud Indian School on the day the ground will be scanned for mass graves. All of the characters we have met along the way have descended on the campus with their own agendas. Some want answers, so... more

In the week leading up to a search for mass graves, two Native American investigators examine troubling events around a former Catholic Indian boarding school on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation.
I loved this podcast. I am Omaha tribe descendant (my grandmother is enrolled and raised on her reservation) and I also had a great, great uncle who worked (and died in a flood) as a Catholic priest on the Pine Ridge reservation. My family was also sent to Genoa Indian School.
I had so many internal conflicts to listen, but also what I believe my ancestors pulling me to confirm the fears and listen. And I am so glad I did. If you are indigenous or a descendant and feel the turmoil around liste... more
While I applaud the effort to show modern native stories, I found this ultimately disappointing. Red Cloud and other schools should continue to look into their histories and investigate. The group wanting to close it down though seemed misguided and when no real scandal was found, I wondered what they were thinking. It seemed the producers grasped at straws with the promise that bodies would be found and painted a picture of “school bad, this group of young activists good”. I hope they conti... more
Why tease children graves when nothing found?
I loved the interviews.
Good job on your investigative research but the quality of the podcast is poor. Whoever produced this series did not quite execute it. The background music throughout the entire series is anxiety inducing, poor taste in music & setting the tone, sounds like Kurt Cobain was playing guitar in the background high as heck, not good, not good at all.
This is hard information to hear and important to know about.
While the subject matter of this podcast is of prime importance and should continue to be a focus of investigatory reporting, the amateurs who made this should have had better guidance in how to structure and present something that they require an audiences attention for nearly six hours. It comes off almost like clickbait, with whole segments teasing the listener on with no payoff for episode after episode. Essentially it’s a five part introduction with a very disappointing conclusion. Don’t te... more
I really like how this podcast is produced to be community centered. I hope there is a second season
Just a heads up that the first couple of episodes are out of order. I hit play on episode 1 and was confused because it opens with “Last time on American Genocide . . . ” So I clicked on episode 2 and discovered it’s actually episode 1. Episode 1 is actually episode 2. I saw a review that said the story line was incoherent and I think it’s just because the episodes are out of order. If you listen in order it makes perfect sense.
The content is informative and powerful. This is a must listen fo... more
I had high hopes for this series and was looking for a deep dive on Red Cloud, much like other podcasts done on Carlisle and other boarding schools. While this podcast had some good interviews for the first two episodes, the remainder of the series seemed to rehash the same sound bites and really did not effectively communicate any new information. This could have been a much shorter series and it should have included many more historical details and facts to help inform listeners of the entire ... more
As the child of an immigrant to turtle island, I am inspired to learn more about native history after listening to this.
Thank you, for making this!
Thank you for doing this important work. It needs to be called by its proper name - genocide.
Essential truth and an excellent podcast!
Thx!
The bottom line facts presented in the podcast are absolutely informative. You cannot be informed about the land you are living on without fully knowing the history of the people who share it and who lived on it previously.
There is an ongoing genocide of so-called minorities in the U.S. and this is a large part of it. The fact that the Catholic Church was and is involved is no surprise. More harm has been done by the Catholic Church globally than most other organized religions.
Hopefully they ... more
I have been waiting for this podcast to start since I saw it and I am so grateful for finding this. I encourage everyone who has a beating heart to listen and digest the magnitude of what happened to the indigenous peoples of this continent and how recently the activities actually are. The implications for the inclusion of this fundamental history into American history is vast and profound and is long overdue.
As a child growing up in New England, a region steeped in Americana and national myt... more
