  • Love the Podcast-One Minor Note

Such a great podcast full of interesting and well-contextualized history. One minor ask. Please refrain from using the “mmm,” “right,” and “mmhmm” sounds while your interviewees are speaking. Its distracting and sounds like an insincere show of active listening—especially when not immediately followed by further discussion by the sound-maker.

  • Love It

I’ve listened to many episodes and love the information but particularly liked the recent 1865 episode and the discussion on the paradigm shift in the political parties and how we might be going through another shift now. What a fascinating assertion!

  • Peggy Arnold Episode

I absolutely loved the latest episode on Peggy Arnold. The “deleted scenes” from history had me gasping along with Dr. Price. I’ll be thinking about Hamilton picking peaches while Benedict escapes and how Peggy and Benedict compare to “bad Felicity” and her spy husband in the Americans for awhile.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When Charlie Met Joan: The Tragedy of the Chaplin Trials and the Failings of American Law - Diane Kiesel
Q: Could you walk us through what drew you to the Chaplin-Barry case and how your background in law influenced your analysis of the trial and the evidentiary issues?
Kiesel describes discovering a 1953 law review article about the trial and how legal rules, especially about evidence and blood tests, guided her to write a fuller narrative than what biographies typically cover.
When Charlie Met Joan: The Tragedy of the Chaplin Trials and the Failings of American Law - Diane Kiesel
Q: Now, full disclosure, you were the first judge we've ever had on the podcast. Would you like us to call you judge? Is that your preferred?
Diane Kiesel explains that in professional contexts she prefers to be addressed by her name, and she discusses how her legal background shaped her approach to researching and interpreting the Chaplin cases.
Art as Political Expression in the American Revolution - Dr. Zara Anishanslin
Q: Do you have a favorite painting from the era and why?
My favorites include Prince Demah's portrait of his enslaver, which embodies illicit transatlantic coaching and resistance, and Robert Edge Pine's portrait of Patience Wright, which beautifully captures her presence and the wax-making context that underpins her political work.
Art as Political Expression in the American Revolution - Dr. Zara Anishanslin
Q: What happened to paintings that don't exist anymore, and how do you piece together those histories?
I rely on contemporary descriptions, letters, and archival traces to reconstruct lost works, recognizing that many pieces disappeared in fires or were misattributed, which is part of why these stories are so crucial to understanding the revolution.
Surviving History - Louee Dessent
Q: How do you deal with morally difficult or unsavory aspects of history on camera, given the need to entertain and educate?
We balance light and shade by including serious moments and reflective summaries at the end of episodes, while still injecting humor where appropriate to reflect how people in those periods coped with challenges.
