  • “Dram”atic account of the journey of the whisky world

Recently started listening to the podcast, following on from Drew’s interview on WhiskyCast.

It’s been a riveting listen, taking me through stories I thought I knew but amazed to find out the facts are not always as have been recounted.

Well worth the listen, testament to this has been myself reaching midway of season 4, without even realising it. You won’t be disappointed if you have an interest in both whisky and history.

  • Almost 5 Star.

…but the narrator says “Benjermin”, “fermiliar”, and “assoshiate”. It’s too grating; he should continue the great research and then get someone else to narrate if he is too old to fix the problem.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

📙 S7:15 - The Four Roses Story: Seagram's Years, the Fall, and Grand Return (1943-Present)
Q: What sparked the revival led by Jim Rutledge and Al Young?
A combination of leadership, a return to quality, leveraging multi-recipe flexibility from the historical yeast strains, and aggressive, strategic marketing and distributor engagement helped push Four Roses back into prominence.
📙 S7:15 - The Four Roses Story: Seagram's Years, the Fall, and Grand Return (1943-Present)
Q: How did Four Roses survive the mid-20th century decline under Seagram's control?
The brand pivoted to blended formulations and leveraged widespread Madison Avenue promotion, while carefully maintaining some bourbon identity; however, the decline was structural, driven by broader strategy shifts and the focus on export markets rather than rebuilding in the U.S.
✈️ WF091 to ALABAMA: Clyde May's Conecuh Ridge Distillery
Q: Do you think he would have gone legal had he had the option to do so?
LC discusses that Clyde May would not have sought legality; the historical context made a license inconceivable, and his era didn't support legal distilling in Alabama.
🎙️ Ep. 136 - TALISKER DISTILLERY: A Taste of History with Ewan Morgan
Q: What makes the TALISKER finishing and maturation approach unique?
Beyond traditional aging, TALISKER experiments with finishes such as a glacial-edge approach using volcanic rock-toasted virgin oak, and carefully manages cask types (refill American oak for long-term aging, occasional sherry or PX finishes) to balance power, maritime notes, and terroir without overpowering the core TALISKER character.
🎙️ Ep. 136 - TALISKER DISTILLERY: A Taste of History with Ewan Morgan
Q: How has TALISKER's distillery architecture and equipment changed over time?
Originally with six stills in a layout designed by architect Charles Doig, the distillery moved from six to five stills after a fire in the 1960s, and later became a more standardized setup; this evolution reflects balancing capacity with modern efficiency while preserving historical lines like the line arm and purifier pipes.
