Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 49 - Management Meeting, Wellness Checks, & OH&S
Q: What's the significance of the health and safety restructuring?
Separating health and safety from SMS ensures focused attention on safety issues and allows for more direct accountability, with a seasoned chair leading the health and safety committee to address safety-related concerns more effectively.
Episode 49 - Management Meeting, Wellness Checks, & OH&S
Q: Can you walk members through what the new fast-read format looks like and why it's important?
It's a concise update that shows what issues were taken to management, what the company did or didn't do, and what the next steps are, so members know we're engaging with the company and pushing for concrete solutions.
Episode 51 - ALPA Canada Interview
Q: For pilots who don't follow union politics closely, what does ALPA Canada do day to day and how does it fit into the bigger ALPA structure?
ALPA Canada serves as the governing body within ALPA, articulating international positions in Canada, engaging regulators, government, and industry, and developing issues important to Canadian pilots. It supports bargaining by shaping the political environment and ensuring fair processes, while advocating for Canadian-specific priorities and safety-focused policies.
Episode 47 - Contract Comparison
Q: What two or three things would you want pilots to focus on first?
I think just reminding yourself that you are not supposed to be a subject matter expert; this is an educational tool with no timeline. Take your time to read what you're comfortable going through, take it one section at a time, and understand that there's no bonus for finishing quickly, only the aim of educating the pilot group as we go into CA3.
Episode 47 - Contract Comparison
Q: And once they've read it, what next?
Well, if you've read it, congratulations. Give yourself a pat on the back. It took us a long time to put together, so we appreciate you coming along this journey with us. The next steps are to stay engaged, keep an eye out for quick reads and did-you-knows, and participate as we move toward CA3.
