  • A great recap of the markets with character

I've been listening to this podcast since a few weeks ago and must say that it's really very good. A no-nonsense review of what happened in the markets and some commentary from managers of funds. Glad to see Wells Fargo Advantage Funds on the cutting edge once again. I also just signed up to get Peter Nulty's daily e-mail newsletter, the Daily Advantage and it's great! Keep up the great work Peter and team!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

VIDEO: Thinking Emerging Markets? Think Small.
Q: How do you sift through thousands of securities to find high-quality, durable businesses for EM small caps?
We distill the universe into a quality pool of about 300 names, focusing on capable management with insider ownership, governance features like shareholder-friendly capital allocation, and avoiding cross-holdings where families control too much of the float; this disciplined process targets companies with potential to scale from small to mid/large caps.
VIDEO: Thinking Emerging Markets? Think Small.
Q: What's the single strongest argument you can make to a committee for a first-time EM small-cap allocation?
EM small caps are vastly underrepresented (roughly 2.5% of equity capital) despite delivering higher relative outperformance to their large-cap peers; the asset class has a thinner coverage base which creates more stock-picking opportunities for active managers to uncover durable, growth-oriented businesses at reasonable valuations.
VIDEO: Tested by Turbulence: Emerging Markets During Geopolitical Turmoil
Q: Derek, does the EM thesis still hold given the current environment?
The thesis remains intact; EMs are undervalued and under-owned, with headroom for inflows and selective opportunities supported by earnings growth and improving fundamentals.
VIDEO: Concentration Nation: The Risks Behind Peak Passive
Q: How are your teams navigating the MAG7 concentration using systematic strategies?
The team blends quantitative alpha models with fundamental insight, maintains broad universe coverage beyond MAG-7, and emphasizes risk management to participate in major themes while avoiding excessive exposure to any single factor or stock group.
VIDEO: Concentration Nation: The Risks Behind Peak Passive
Q: What does peak passive mean in the current market context?
Peak passive is discussed as a symptom of rising passive flows that concentrated wealth in mega-cap stocks; as flows potentially reverse, the risk is amplified due to the market's heavy reliance on a small group of stocks, necessitating diversification and risk-aware, systematic approaches.
