  • Episode on Adding Hunting to your Operation

In many states, you can also check out your state’s public hunting and fishing lease program through your state fish and game agency. In Nebraska this program (Open Fields and Waters) provides an annual per acre payment based on habitat type, takes care of signage, and waives the landowner of all liability through the Nebraska Recreational Liability Act. Additional cost share and technical assistance for habitat improvements (cedar tree removal, prescribed fire, or even incentives to help cover... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cattle Market Conditions with Dr. David Anderson
Q: Let's talk a little bit about consumer demand. What's going on with retail meat and prices as we move from grilling season into summer?
Beef demand has remained strong and is benefiting from broader protein demand, with growth in higher-grade products and convenience formats. However, consumer spending power is affected by fuel costs and relative prices, which can dampen demand over time, even as beef maintains a preference among shoppers.
Strategic Cowherd Destocking to Promote Future Rebuilding
Q: What should producers do first when considering cow herd changes during a drought?
Start with a cow herd inventory to understand what you have, including age, production stage, and the value of each class, so decisions aren't made in a rush and can be aligned with rebuilding goals.
Early Weaning Calves - A Producer Perspective
Q: What is the historical origin of your early weaning practice and how did it start in your operation?
It began in the early 2000s as a drought-responsive strategy, but we realized early weaning could double as a production-timing tool, getting calves off the cow quickly and onto a high-energy ration to hit slaughter-weight targets earlier.
Using Ultrasound for Early Pregnancy Diagnosis and Sexing Calves
Q: Talk a little more about sexing calves, how does that work and how can producers work with their veterinarian to set this up for success?
Discuss with your vet to ensure they are comfortable performing the sexing, since ultrasound-based sexing has become a routine best practice and can be incorporated with existing pregnancy checks to identify whether a calf will be a heifer or a bull.
Prussic Acid May Still be Present in Harvested Hay
Q: How does silage compare to hay or grazing in terms of safety, and what should producers do before feeding sorghum silage?
Well-made silage with low pH and proper moisture control reduces prussic acid risk and hydrogen cyanide release; producers should test silage risk post-processing and consider delaying feeding to allow further breakdown of prussic acid, particularly in drought scenarios.
