Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Si Paton Joins The VDH Podcast
Q: How did you come to revive the Malverns Classic?
Clive Gosling suggested funding and support, and after negotiating with venue and sponsors, Si Paton relaunched the Malverns as GT Bicycles Malverns Classic, overcoming early financial stress and turning it into a sustainable festival.
Frank The Welder Joins The VDH Podcast
Q: Can you share what happened with the tube-set incident and what you learned from it?
I cut and welded a tube set without fully considering the consequences and insurance implications. It caused a major disruption, but Zapata Espinosa intervened, the issue was resolved, and I learned the importance of coordinating with leadership and understanding the legal/insurance framework before deviating from approved designs.
Frank The Welder Joins The VDH Podcast
Q: What led to Yeti's shift toward aluminum frames and how did that change your role there?
The move to aluminum was driven by a push for lighter, stiffer frames that could improve race performance. It broadened the engineering requirements and allowed us to explore new geometries. I contributed welding expertise and influenced the fabrication methods, while also helping with some of the component development.
Frank The Welder Joins The VDH Podcast
Q: For listeners who don't know you, can you introduce who you are and what you do?
I'm Frank Wadelton, known as Frank The Welder. I started welding in my garage and progressed through production welding and custom frame work, collaborating with brands and racers, and eventually running a shop that builds frames and components across multiple venues and even motorcycles and cars.
Nigel Page Joins The VDH Podcast
Q: What was the most pivotal moment in your racing career?
The X Games bronze on the snow track stands out as a peak, but he also highlights the 1998 season with Rotwild and the World Cup experiences as transformative, both in competition and exposure through magazines.
