  • Great, info-packed, inspirational and entertaining podcasts!

I can’t believe I just stumbled upon this podcast. It is truly packed with useful information and inspirational, entertaining stories for anyone interested in thru hiking. I’m now eagerly going through past episodes, especially those focusing on information useful for my upcoming thru hike of the John Muir Trail and my plans to finish section hiking the Continental Divide Trail (at least within Colorado). I’ve just finished listening to episode 191 with “Just Mike” McClure, and it is so useful. ... more

  • Awesome stories and advice from real people

I love hearing the stories from fellow thru hikers. Carol’s format of having hikers report from the trail is so cool and I love feeling like I’m on trail with people. Some of my favorite episodes feature Dim Sum.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

236. The Roadless Rule & Saving Public Lands With Nicole Brown Of Outdoor Alliance
Q: If the rule is rolled back, what does that mean specifically for the Pacific Crest Trail and other long trails?
It could mean miles of the PCT and other long trails lose their roadless protections, forcing agency reroutes and disrupting multiple recreation activities in those regions, with impacts on wildlife, water quality, and habitat connectivity.
236. The Roadless Rule & Saving Public Lands With Nicole Brown Of Outdoor Alliance
Q: Could you give us a high-level look at what the roadless rule is and why it matters to listeners who hike or recreate on public lands?
The roadless rule protects 58 million acres of roadless areas within national forests, preserving where people can camp, hike, kayak, and bike without heavy development. Rolling it back would open these areas to more extractive activities, causing uncertainty, potential access losses, and significant rerouting for long trails like the PCT.
235. International Travel & Hiking The Camino, The Hexatrek & Kilimanjaro With Sandra "MacGyver"
Q: What are your best tips and thoughts on researching international travel?
Rely on a mix of social media, YouTube, and official guides or groups for each destination; use forums like Facebook groups and country-specific networks to gather practical details like visas, guides, and route options, while also paying attention to safety and local customs.
230. Ramen Bomb Ratios, A Great Town Meal & Knowing When To Draw The Line On The Pacific Crest Trail With Anna "Magic" McKinney Smith
Q: What was your favorite, your worst and your scariest memory from the PCT?
My scariest was climbing Mount Whitney; my best was any time with my trail family; and my worst was navigating fire and smoke issues in Northern California.
226. Thru-Hiking Tips, How To Afford Long Hikes, & The Best Cinnamon Roll On The Pacific Crest Trail With Casey "Vegas" Huffman
Q: How financially are you able to afford a Thru-Hike?
Selling my house and working for ESOP companies provided significant financial support for my thru-hiking lifestyle.
