  • I look forward to every episode

I love the topics, knowledge, and enthusiasm you have. I love Surfcasting, but don’t get many opportunities to make it out each season. This podcast helps me feel connected to the passion and helps me learn. Thank you very much for providing this. A possible topic for a future episode that could be interesting would be, “what percentage of stripers do you catch on each type of lure during the season?”.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S3 E33 | The Gang Talks Spots
Q: When in the testing process do you throw in a wild card like an extreme weather event or unusual tide, and how do you decide to push for a test then?
Wild cards are usually managed by having pre-allocated slots for such events within your portfolio of spots; otherwise they tend to be serendipitous, dictated by current opportunities rather than forced experimentation.
S3 E33 | The Gang Talks Spots
Q: Do you have a rule of how long to test a spot—how many tides or moons to give it before you decide it's worth pursuing long term?
The approach is highly situational; it depends on how complex the spot is and the pattern you're building. For simpler spots you might test across a few cycles, but for more complex ones you may invest across multiple moons and various tide stages, spreading tests over time rather than consecutive nights to capture changing conditions.
S3 E32 | Hunting Giant Striped Bass In The Surf With Jimmy Fee
Q: If you catch a 50 but don't weigh it, is it still a 50?
The number on the scale matters less over time; the experience and satisfaction of the catch matter more, though many anglers still weigh for bragging rights.
S3 E32 | Hunting Giant Striped Bass In The Surf With Jimmy Fee
Q: What's the biggest mistake anglers make when chasing a 50-pounder?
Bad knots and gear handling, especially on the heel hook, are a major mistake; preparation, proper knot-tying and gear reliability are essential when the bite is on the line.
S3 E32 | Hunting Giant Striped Bass In The Surf With Jimmy Fee
Q: Jimmy, is fishing for a large striped bass, especially a 50-pounder, better earlier in the night or later?
In my experience, most of my big fish comes after 11pm, driven by personal schedules and tidal windows; however, the best window can vary, and I've had big bites on both sides of midnight depending on conditions.
