  • Unfortunately insurance salesman who also talk about investments

Their defense of annuities showed their hand. They are insurance shills who also talk about investing. Interesting information and some good insight, but zero credibility if you are not a 100% fee only fiduciary.

  • This show grows on you, except ...

The rabbit discussion is very bizarre. And the comments about Illinois. That was a funny comment about Jim being a pithy speaker.

  • A show that helps me keep my head above water

Jim and Chris are very knowledgeable and share their retirement planning with us. As an aside, I enjoy the banter and the state quizzes. I admit it took a few episodes until the show clicked with me, but now I’m hooked. The topics pertain to anyone in or near retirement age.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Social Security, ERISA, Trusts: Q&A #2616
Q: How does survivor benefits work when one spouse delayed claiming to 70 and the other is much younger—can the survivor get the delayed credits?
The survivor can keep the deceased's delayed retirement credits, but if the survivor claims before their own full retirement age there can be reductions; if the older spouse waits to 70, the survivor may step into those benefits later and receive the higher survivor amount once eligible.
Social Security, ERISA, Trusts: Q&A #2616
Q: If he files for Social Security at 64 but continues to work, will his benefits be reduced and how does that affect the family?
Benefits can be reduced under the earnings test when earnings exceed the threshold before full retirement age, and the reductions are recalculated later as if claimed later, effectively increasing future monthly amounts, but not as a lump sum; the impact on the family depends on overall earnings and benefit totals.
Social Security, Wash Sales, Taxes: Q&A #2617
Q: A listener asks about a Roth conversion and how to handle taxes, especially with TurboTax and Form 2210 for underpayment penalties; how should they handle this scenario?
Roth conversions can be paid for with estimated taxes in the quarter of the conversion, but if the income is not earned evenly through the year, use Form 2210 to adjust for the actual timing of the income so the IRS doesn't misclassify withholding. If an underpayment penalty is incurred, filing 2210 correctly can remove or reduce it by showing that the income was concentrated in the quarter of conversion and that estimated payments were made accordingly.
Social Security, Wash Sales, Taxes: Q&A #2617
Q: If both spouses are over 62 and delaying benefits until 70, how does the rule that the higher benefit is paid affect spousal eligibility and the family maximum?
When both spouses are over 62 and delay benefits, each can receive their own capped benefit based on their own PIA; if one's PIA is higher than half the other's, the higher of the two is paid as the individual benefit rather than a spousal amount. The family maximum applies to multiple beneficiaries on one work record, not to two people each collecting their own benefit, so long as the rules for eligibility are satisfied.
Social Security, Wash Sales, Taxes: Q&A #2617
Q: Please provide clarification on when an ex-spouse can claim a spousal benefit and how the 10-year marriage rule interacts with the worker's filing.
Ex-spouses can claim a spousal benefit if they were married for at least 10 years, and the worker is collecting or eligible to collect their own Social Security benefit. The ex-spouse does not need the worker to have filed for their own benefit, as long as the divorce occurred at least two years prior and other criteria are met; if the ex-spouse's own benefit is higher than the spousal benefit, they simply receive their own benefit, and the spousal option does not apply.
