  • This show grows on you, except ...

The rabbit discussion is very bizarre. And the comments about Illinois. That was a funny comment about Jim being a pithy speaker.

  • A show that helps me keep my head above water

Jim and Chris are very knowledgeable and share their retirement planning with us. As an aside, I enjoy the banter and the state quizzes. I admit it took a few episodes until the show clicked with me, but now I’m hooked. The topics pertain to anyone in or near retirement age.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tax Filing, HSAs, I Bonds, RMDs, Roth Conversions: Q&A #2611
Q: My workplace allows for 401k mega backdoor Roth. I contribute after-tax money that gets immediately converted to my Roth 401k. Do I need to amend my 1099R if the tax treatment of the distribution seems off?
Amending the return is advisable when the information in 1099R does not align with the Roth conversion. The advisor recommends ensuring that box 1 and box 2A/2B are correctly matched to the conversion so the IRS sees consistent data, avoiding possible future correspondence. The process is generally straightforward and worth doing to prevent future penalties or audits.
Social Security, IRMAA, Disclaiming Inheritances, Roth Conversions: Q&A #2609
Q: If my spouse has a non-Ira inheritance or a brokerage account, can we simply disclaim it and pass to children to avoid taxes or complications?
Disclaiming can be used in some IRA scenarios to redirect benefits to contingent beneficiaries, but it is not universally applicable to non-IRA assets like brokerage accounts. The rules depend on state, asset type, and the intended beneficiaries; there is no one-size-fits-all answer, and professional guidance is advised.
Social Security, IRMAA, Disclaiming Inheritances, Roth Conversions: Q&A #2609
Q: What exactly is SSA 44 Irmaa relief and when should one file it if a pension runs out or a major income change occurs?
SSA 44 is used to request an Irmaa reduction based on life-changing events such as loss of pension income; if applied correctly, it can lower the IRMAA tier. Relief timing matters; if the change reduces income mid-year, the relief should be reflected in subsequent Medicare premium notices, and a new form may be required for subsequent years depending on the situation.
Social Security, IRMAA, Disclaiming Inheritances, Roth Conversions: Q&A #2609
Q: If my wife claimed Social Security at 62 and I claimed at 67, what happens to survivor benefits if I pass away first?
The surviving spouse would typically receive 100% of the higher earner's benefit if that benefit is greater than the survivor's own benefit, and early claiming on the survivor's own record does not affect the survivor benefit from the deceased spouse. If the survivor is younger than full retirement age, some reductions may apply to survivor benefits until that age, but once at or past full retirement age, the survivor benefit aligns with the higher benefit.
Medicare, Social Security, Inherited Roth, Annuities: Q&A #2607
Q: What is the difference between inherited Roth IRAs and traditional IRAs concerning required distributions?
An inherited Roth IRA does not require minimum distributions, while a traditional IRA does if the original owner passed away after their required beginning date.
