Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Bet the Farm: Mike Weber's Fight Against Activist Attacks & Avian Flu
Q: What leadership lessons would you share for new entrants to the industry?
Stay focused on people, be willing to invest in transparency, prepare for crises, and treat farming as a long-term mission where you support your community and workforce, not just the business.
Bet the Farm: Mike Weber's Fight Against Activist Attacks & Avian Flu
Q: What happened during the bird flu outbreak and what did you do to manage it?
When the outbreak hit, we mobilized a rapid euthanization response, deployed PPE and trained staff, coordinated with CDFA, and shared a plan to protect neighboring farms, ultimately containing the outbreak and aiding a swift recovery.
Bet the Farm: Mike Weber's Fight Against Activist Attacks & Avian Flu
Q: How did you respond to the ballot initiative designed to eliminate poultry operations in your county?
We organized a broad community response, rallied supervisors, city councils, police, and unions, and ran a comprehensive information campaign that highlighted the farm economy and local food culture, ultimately defeating the measure by a large margin.
Bet the Farm: Mike Weber's Fight Against Activist Attacks & Avian Flu
Q: Can you give me some background on the activism and how it started affecting your farm?
We described the activist group as vegan extremists who used direct action to disrupt farms, including illegal trespassing and aggressive public demonstrations, which jeopardized safety and operations. We built a broad coalition and communicated with authorities to defend our farm and rebuild public trust.
Replay: Everything is Possible, Interview with Benji Campbell, Cal-Maine Foods, Episode 1
Q: Are there anything you do to help yourself grow and learn?
I listen to upper-management, absorb their guidance, and continuously seek to learn from daily operations and leadership discussions to improve as a leader.
