  • Life’s Roller Coaster Buddy

Firstly, Sarah Collins is a delight. Learning from her vast professional expertise and her “in the trenches” as a mom (applying regulating strategies and practical everyday therapies) wisdom has helped me navigate life with my neuro-spicy offspring. One particularly hard thing about parenting a neurodivergent kid(s) is the feeling of isolation. No one seems to authentically understand the struggles of daily life. It’s like I’m riding a new rollercoaster each day. I’m relentlessly trying to deal... more

  • Finally found the help I needed!

A friend of mine introduced me to this podcast, and it has been one of the first resources that’s been truly helpful. I feel like most of the resources I’ve discovered that are geared toward raising neurodivergent kids are heavily targeted at public school families (utterly unhelpful for a mom trying to educate nearly five neurodiverse students!). I was desperate for help with teaching my boys executive function skills as well as to connect with other homeschooling moms who are in similar situat... more

Begin basics around age five with simple, short phonics instruction, expanding to more formal first-grade level by age six, following a scope and sequence in the chosen curriculum.
Supporting Struggling Readers: Tips for Homeschooling Parents
Q: Melanie, before we get started on that, can you give us a basic background of who you are and what makes you interested in this topic?

Using Music to Support Regulation, Learning, and Connection in Homeschooling and Therapy
Q: What exactly does merging music therapy and occupational therapy look like in practice?
It involves training OTs to use music more effectively, recognizing individual music preferences, and designing activities where music supports regulation, learning, and engagement, not just therapy sessions.
Body Awareness- Indoor Activities
Q: Why is movement important, and how does body movement connect to other activities kids need during the day?
Moving supports overall physical health, enhances brain function through increased blood flow, and refines core skills like proprioception and kinesthesia, which underpin body awareness and ultimately impact tasks like handwriting and daily self-care.
Body Awareness- Indoor Activities
Q: Can you describe what teletherapy looks like for families that can't go into a therapy situation and what a day in the life might look like?
Teletherapy can be conducted remotely with a focus on hands-on, practical activities; sessions involve modeling exercises, coaching caregivers, and using household items to support handwriting, fine motor, and gross motor goals, with flexibility to work outdoors and adapt to the home environment.
