  • Important, creative, enjoyable listen

For how quickly the subject matter of this podcast is pressing itself upon our society, it still feels relatively rare to experience it discussed with nuance (and panache, no less!). I hope that, as a culture, we will begin asserting our right to partake in the shaping of our world by technology. Partake and limit, as we see fit. I’m curious and excited to continue listening to the insights of the series.

  • Refreshing

A thoughtful antidote to the techno-optimism that abounds. My friends called me a Luddite but now I realise it should be taken as a compliment. Well mostly….

Inside the Anti-AI Protests
Q: Do organizers plan to scale this into a global, coordinated movement?
There are steps toward more centralized coordination in some chapters (Pause AI UK and Pull the Plug connections), with plans for future protests in Washington, but overall the movement remains heterogeneous and decentralized.
Inside the Anti-AI Protests
Q: What are the main goals being urged by Pause AI and similar groups, and how realistic are they?
The groups push for pausing certain developments and for more citizen-led discussions like assemblies; while ambitious, there's debate about feasibility and the risk of stalling innovation entirely, though there's interest in policy-oriented routes.
Inside the Anti-AI Protests
Q: What was the composition of the protest crowd, and did it skew more toward technologists or everyday activists?
The crowd was mixed: a substantial number of tech people and students, but also a strong contingent of researchers and general activists, reflecting the AI safety movement's traditional base plus a growing concern about immediate harms.
Who's Afraid of Artificial Intelligence?
Q: Talk me through this fear as a sort of propaganda weapon.
The fears surrounding AI were amplified by those selling it, creating narratives that highlight the dangers as part of a sales strategy.
Who's Afraid of Artificial Intelligence?
Q: Was it the complexity of the language in ChatGPT which was a breakthrough for AI?
Yes, it highlighted the potential of machines to learn human-like language, changing public perception significantly.
