  • Excellent Podcast

5 stars. Been listening since mid 2019. Great podcast and appreciate diving into monetary policy. Christian and Patricia are great interviewers and do a good job researching and preparing for episode topics. Thank you for providing all the hours of information and entertainment. If you are new to the podcast some of my favorite episodes are the MMT Money Story from Warren back in July 2019, and I think the central bank episode with Steven Hail is also an interesting one.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#211 A Time-Critical Plan For UK Energy Prices And Security with Patricia Pino
Q: What makes your price-shaping mechanism feasible within existing institutions?
The proposal relies on export levies paired with import-attraction subsidies and fixed-term offtake contracts; it's designed to operate within existing treaties and market structures, with discretion over activation to avoid permanent distortions.
#211 A Time-Critical Plan For UK Energy Prices And Security with Patricia Pino
Q: Why can't we just set a much lower energy price cap and have cheap energy long-term?
The price cap reflects input costs and is updated quarterly; cutting it unilaterally would require addressing the underlying market structure, which currently causes volatility and misalignment between gas costs and electricity prices.
#214 Live: A Job Guarantee For The UK with Patricia Pino and Bill Mitchell (part 2)
Q: Who decides what counts as a job under the job guarantee, and what counts as a 'good' job?
The panel outlines broad principles: jobs should be useful but non-essential, not risk life or rights, and should not displace existing public-sector roles, with local authorities adapting within national guidelines.
#212 From Austerity To Resilience - How to Build a Better Economy with Steven Hail
Q: How does MMT view inflation differently from the mainstream view?
MMT treats inflation as a sectoral and resource-availability issue rather than a simple demand-push phenomenon; inflation results from real resource constraints and supply-side shocks, meaning policy must focus on allocating resources efficiently and targeting sectors where bottlenecks occur, rather than relying solely on interest rate changes.
#212 From Austerity To Resilience - How to Build a Better Economy with Steven Hail
Q: Why are we so passionate about the MMT view of money and why is it urgent to build a better economy?
Because the current austerity narrative restricts what governments can do, while MMT explains that spending creates money and that policy can be used to expand productive resources without being constrained by a bond market fear, enabling investments in public services, infrastructure, and social welfare.
