  • Excellent Podcast

5 stars. Been listening since mid 2019. Great podcast and appreciate diving into monetary policy. Christian and Patricia are great interviewers and do a good job researching and preparing for episode topics. Thank you for providing all the hours of information and entertainment. If you are new to the podcast some of my favorite episodes are the MMT Money Story from Warren back in July 2019, and I think the central bank episode with Steven Hail is also an interesting one.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#204 A Government Budget Is Nothing Like A Household Budget. So What IS It Like? with Steven Hail
Q: If a government budget is not like a household budget, what is it like?
It is a sovereign currency issuer that creates money through spending and taxes serve to influence demand and finance, rather than to fund spending directly; the state can finance spending as long as it passes budget appropriations and maintains policy goals.
#203 Zackonomics and the budget with Phil Armstrong (part 2)
Q: What is the core distinction between a job guarantee and traditional government investment?
The job guarantee acts as a bottom-up mechanism that targets an immediate unemployment problem, while investments are top-down projects chosen to deliver specific goals; both are necessary, but they operate through different pathways to employment and growth.
#205 Economics At The Movies with Sam Levey
Q: Tell us about short selling.
Short selling is selling an asset you do not own by borrowing it, selling it at the current price, and later buying it back to return the borrowed asset; profits come if the price falls, with risk of unlimited losses if it rises.
#198 How Captured Economics Stole Our Future & What To Do About It with Katy Shields
Q: How would you even begin to hold economists accountable?
Shields suggests that accountability mechanisms in economics, such as integrating ethics, are necessary for better societal outcomes; however, she herself does not have a concrete solution.
#198 How Captured Economics Stole Our Future & What To Do About It with Katy Shields
Q: Could you lay out your analogy of a workaholic friend?
Katy explains that mainstream economics resembles a doctor prescribing performance-enhancing drugs to a workaholic rather than addressing the root cause of overwork, indicating that economists are failing to offer solutions that prioritize long-term human and ecological health.
