Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

US Open Preview!
Q: What is the wind forecast and how could it affect scoring on Thursday and Friday?
Wind is expected to be a major factor, with gusts up to 30 mph and sustained winds that could challenge even the best players; early tee times may offer a slight edge as winds ease in the morning, while light, tactical play becomes crucial.
New URI Atheltic Director Pat Lyons
Q: What stood out to you about URI's campus and infrastructure, and how does that impact your plans as AD?
Coming back to URI, the infrastructure and the land available compared with the more landlocked prior environments stood out. The campus is expansive and provides growth potential for facilities, partnerships, and multi-campus collaborations. This alignment with leadership and board support was a decisive factor in accepting the role and in planning for the future.
New URI Atheltic Director Pat Lyons
Q: What is your assessment of the Atlantic 10 and URI's position within it, especially with the Big East competition in mind?
The A-10 has evolved into a highly competitive league, and Dan Gavitt's leadership should help elevate it. URI's goal is to be near the top six and to raise the league's profile to compete for national relevance similar to the Big East. It will require broad conference-wide resource investment and a shared vision among presidents and athletic directors to move the league forward.
New URI Atheltic Director Pat Lyons
Q: How do you view URI's basketball program and how does funding and resources play into your plan for competing at a high level?
We want to win across the board in all sports, including basketball, and we will secure the resources necessary to support our coaches and athletes. We expect to be aggressive in the transfer portal where appropriate, with NIL considerations, and we will ensure our programs have the resources to compete for conference championships. Archie Miller's status and future impact are part of that broader plan, and we will work to align funding with strategic goals.
New URI Atheltic Director Pat Lyons
Q: Pat, you get the job, and one of your highest profile coaches, Tammy Reese, leaves for Florida—how did you approach that hire and the immediate search process?
I leaned on a thorough but efficient search, interviewing seven to nine candidates, and aimed to find someone who could immediately step in and positively impact the program. Colleen Mullen emerged as the first and best choice from the start, and we moved quickly—she was on campus the next day at 10 o'clock after the interview. It was important to be thorough yet decisive to serve the university, the state, and the players.
