Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Where Values Lead: Schools as Villages with Shane Woodrow
Q: What is the core purpose of schooling according to your experiences this year?
Schooling should inspire, foster joy and safety, and develop relationships and character, ensuring that learning is meaningful and rooted in community and care rather than merely chasing performance metrics.
Where Values Lead: Schools as Villages with Shane Woodrow
Q: How do you reconcile inquiry-based learning with explicit teaching in the classroom?
Both have a role; inquiry guides students to explore and develop understanding, while explicit teaching provides targeted support when needed. The best practice blends observation, facilitation, and timely direct instruction to advance learning.
Where Values Lead: Schools as Villages with Shane Woodrow
Q: Tell us about the gap year and how it shaped your views on schooling.
The gap year has been about visiting diverse schools, observing how they place values at the center, and building connections with educators worldwide to understand how curriculum can be values-led and relational, rather than solely focused on traditional benchmarks.
Learning to Notice Differently with Lisa Goddard
Q: Could you describe what the Anthropocene is, and then also post-human pedagogies, and how you got interested in it all?
The Anthropocene is a term for the current geologic era marked by human impact on the planet, which leads to crises like ecological degradation and social disparities. Post-human pedagogy proposes de-centering the human in education, focusing on relationships with the more-than-human world, and rethinking our practices to be more collaborative and relational.
Honouring the Moment: We Are Part of the Story with Ron Grady
Q: What suggestions do you have for educators who don't have a lot of time for reflection?
He suggests starting with what's already happening, using five minutes of reflection tied to existing activities (like literacy milestones or art), and using voice notes or sticky notes to capture quick observations, then gradually building a consistent practice.
