Love the company out in the field, with my flock. These guys have done a brilliant job on this journey consistently adding high quality relevant content. Guest speakers. Their banter is second to none it’s always a pleasure listening to them. Thank you both so much for bringing this much needed educational support to the production oriented shepherds in the sheep industry!

  • Enjoy listening

My husband and I are nearing our 2nd anniversary of sheep farming. We have 2 Katahdin rams, 1 wether, and 29 ewes. Oh, and the 40 lambs (so far) that have been born in pasture the last two weeks. I have found this podcast great to listen to - easy to understand for this new-to-farming gal. The topics have been very appropriate for learning from and touch at things we are working through on our farm. The hosts seem quite knowledgeable but share in a way all can understand. Plus they are funny, to... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 172. Soil Testing....Just Do It!!
Q: Why is it important to start with a baseline soil sample?
A baseline shows where you started, which helps track progress when adopting regenerative or grazing-focused practices. Without a baseline, it's hard to demonstrate improvements over time or justify changes. The conversation emphasizes that progress is gradual and that two to three years are often needed to see meaningful changes in soil health, especially in grazing systems.
Ep 172. Soil Testing....Just Do It!!
Q: What do Ward Labs offer to the agricultural community?
Ward Labs provides a full spectrum of soil-related analyses, from a routine, broad baseline soil test (pH, salts, macronutrients, micronutrients, organic matter) to soil health metrics like respiration and water-extractable carbon and nitrogen, plus guidance through results to inform on-ground management. They emphasize starting broad and scaling up as needed, with support from scientists and agronomists who help interpret results. They also discuss lime testing, lime particle size, and region-specific buffer pH tests.
Ep 168 Using Some New Technologies In Breeding
Q: What are the cost implications of embryo transfer per donor and per live lamb?
The team cites a total cost per donor per flush of just over $2,500, about $274 per viable embryo, and an estimated $455 per live lamb when projecting about 60 lambs from 103 embryos.
Ep 168 Using Some New Technologies In Breeding
Q: Would you say you were pleased with the results of the first flush in Katahdin sheep?
The guests discuss that the first flush yielded an average of around 10.7 transferable viable embryos per six donors, with some donors performing much better than others, and that variability is expected but overall promising for planning future transfers.
Ep 148 Winter Woes
Q: Are you supplementing anything out on pasture? When you get that snow, how do you assess?
The sheep have enough grass under the snow, so there's no need for supplementation.
