  • Great Podcast, poor Audio Quality

I really enjoy the content of this podcast but feel it really suffers from the poor audio quality. Surprisingly it’s not the guest but the presenter’s audio that is bad. It makes it hard to listen to. This is unfortunate given the valuable content and time people are giving to talk. I hope it will improve!

  • Blown away

I love this podcast and am so grateful to David Nutt for the work he does. Thank you David for your scientific rigor and compassionate approach to your guests.

I was blown away by the doctor on ‘Former Doctor, Former Prisoner’. He was an absolute inspiration to all those in recovery. I really sad that the GMC removed his medical license. Surely he has served his punishment? He is clearly a thoughtful and intelligent man who turned his life around. Why is addiction punished rather than rehabili... more

  • Audio quality makes it hard to follow

Sometimes, sadly more than often the quality of the audio is like a really bad telephone call. This is sad since you all are rich men who just didn't do the homework.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

148. Sleep, Dreams and Sigmund Freud with Prof Mark Solms
Q: What is the role of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in this framework?
Psychedelics can open access to aspects of cognition and emotion that are otherwise hard to reach, but integration with trained psychotherapy is essential to translate these experiences into lasting changes.
148. Sleep, Dreams and Sigmund Freud with Prof Mark Solms
Q: What makes The Only Cure distinct in the landscape of mental health treatments?
It's not anti-therapy overall; it emphasizes that talking therapies, including psychoanalysis, address underlying causes of psychopathology and can be highly effective when combined with other treatments, rather than merely alleviating symptoms.
148. Sleep, Dreams and Sigmund Freud with Prof Mark Solms
Q: How does Freud fit into modern neuroscience in your view?
Freud's ideas about wishes and unconscious processes were not fully correct in their original form, but they pointed toward the importance of non-conscious motivational processes; neuroscience now supports that there are deep, structured systems driving dream content.
145. Psychedelics, Power and the Price of Healing with Erica Rex
Q: Could you describe the potential role of MDMA in trauma therapy and how group settings might influence outcomes?
MDMA can help people access emotions safely by increasing oxytocin and reducing fear, but it must be facilitated with strong boundaries and skilled facilitators; group settings can provide buffering and shared witnessing, though the approach must be carefully controlled to prevent harm.
137. Cultural History of the Magic Mushroom with Dr Andy Letcher
Q: How did that lead you to religion, and the study of religion?
My involvement through road protesting led me to meet a professor of religious studies, who invited me to do a second PhD.
