  • Very informative

This is one of my favorite informational podcasts as a dairy farmer. When discussing a subject you always start at the base level before getting into details which is so important. I enjoy that it’s based in Canada but still gets outside perspectives. My only complaint is that there isn’t more! Thank you for taking the time to make this podcast!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dr. Claira Seeley
Q: Are you seeing a trend in the industry where people are maybe using a bolus strategy differently?
There is a trend away from giving calcium boluses to all cows that have calved, with more focus on targeting those that are clinically hypocalcemic.
Dr. Claira Seeley
Q: What are some of the long-term effects of subclinical hypocalcemia?
Cows with lower blood calcium levels at four days in milk typically produce less milk, experience delayed time to pregnancy, and have an increased risk of health disorders.
Dr. Heather Dann
Q: How do you manage dietary changes based on the season?
Adjustments in energy density depend on intake levels and the changing conditions, especially between hotter and colder months.
Dr. Heather Dann
Q: What can we do to help mitigate heat stress on the heavily pregnant cows?
Cooling the cows during their dry period can significantly benefit their milk production post-calving.
Dr. Christine Baes
Q: What makes a cow resilient versus not?
A resilient cow can stay fertile, produce milk, not get sick, use less feed, and adapt well to climate changes.
