  • Mel

I’m 58 and looking to retire within 5 years and am learning so much listening to your podcast. Thank you! Have you talked about someone in my situation wanting to move their mutual funded RRSP and TFSA from big bank to self directed investments never having done this on their own and deciding what ETFs are best for this stage of life. Can an RRSP go into one ETF? Perhaps a balanced ETF? Same question for a TFSA. I appreciate all the great information you offer all of us

  • Very useful information

I read David’s first book, “The Wealthy Barber” when I was a teenager and loved the practical and useful information in it. This podcast brings information in the same way: very useful, practical, and always explained in easy to understand terms.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#68 — Brian Portnoy: A Behavioural Finance Expert on How to Shape a Life of Money and Meaning
Q: Tell us about Lydia and how it integrates with Conquest to support advisors and clients.
Lydia is a behavioral coach embedded within the advisor's software, designed to support conversations, stress-test plans, and ensure decisions are made with psychological awareness, not just math. The goal is to pair EQ with IQ to improve implementation and adherence of financial plans.
#57 — Daniel Crosby: How to Overcome Your Financial Biases
Q: What is the one or two biases that haunt more people than any other?
The biggest one is ego/overconfidence, followed by emotion, conservatism, and attention; these four tend to derail people and are often reinforced by the way we live and invest, so they're the primary targets for improvement.
#55 — Mark McGrath: All-in-One ETFs, Rent vs. Buy and Financial Trade-Offs
Q: Should investors worry about tax-rate changes when using RRSPs or TFSAs, and how does inflation of tax brackets affect planning?
Tax-rate changes add uncertainty for RRSPs as taxes are deferred, while TFSAs expose you to potential policy shifts but provide certainty today. Inflation of tax brackets means future brackets may be higher, which can change where withdrawals sit in retirement, often making long-term planning essential rather than relying on static assumptions.
#50 — Ben Felix (Returns): Investing Insights and Rapid-Fire Q&A
Q: What behavioral traps should DIY investors guard against?
Overconfidence can make people think they can beat the market, while pessimism can cause them to miss out on long-term opportunity; both biases undermine steady, rational investing over time.
#50 — Ben Felix (Returns): Investing Insights and Rapid-Fire Q&A
Q: Do you ever try market timing yourself given your access to data and tools?
Even with powerful tools, market timing is not reliable; you're competing against the collective knowledge of all investors, and attempts to time the market often fail to improve outcomes over long horizons.
