Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rev 3.6 - Gayle Towell of AIM on Developing Best Practices via Experimentation
Q: How do you see IPC area-ratio guidelines fitting into real-world, variable manufacturing environments?
IPC guidelines are a starting point, but real-world results depend on a suite of variables—paste type, stencil finish, substrate, thermal mass, and printer and oven conditions. Hence, practitioners should expect deviations and use iterative testing, consult experts, and adjust rules with the understanding that there is no universal fixed value for every setup.
Rev 3.6 - Gayle Towell of AIM on Developing Best Practices via Experimentation
Q: Can you explain the core idea behind the paper on area ratio and why gravity matters in stencil printing?
The model describes the competition between adhesion forces on the paste with the board versus the adhesion to the stencil walls, and it adds gravity as a volume-dependent force. When thickness changes, gravity becomes more influential, altering the effective area-ratio threshold needed for good paste release; the result is a gravity-adjusted, thickness-dependent area ratio concept rather than a single universal number.
APEX EXPO 2026 Dan Ashley - PVA
Q: Talk to us a little bit about the inspection side of coding. What type of consistency do you see in thickness and distribution?
Dan describes purpose-built inspection platforms and emphasizes that proper initial setup with built-in process controls yields reliable, repeatable results; when a setting drifts, downstream inspections catch potential misplacements, providing valuable quality assurance and insurance against variability.
APEX EXPO 2026 Gene Weiner
Q: Gene, what impresses you most about the industry today while you've got decades of experience behind you?
Weiner responds that the ongoing ability to mentor and guide young engineers, while staying hands-on and curious about new technologies, keeps the field vibrant and commercially viable.
APEX EXPO 2026 Juan Arango - PARMI
Q: How does Parmi's laser-based inspection differ from traditional systems, and how does it handle stitching and field of view vs. full-board scanning?
The laser head is small and can scan the entire board, giving a complete image in real time without the cycle-time penalties seen with older Morrier-based systems. Full-board scanning avoids blind spots and reduces the need to stitch only around the components, enabling faster, more comprehensive inspection.
