  • Pronunciation

As someone who is Chinese but not caught up because I was raised in a western country, I clicked on this podcasts in hope to use Chinese saying in my daily life and just have it play in the background, however, when I heard the Chinese saying, that’s when I realised I’d have to check the actual sayings myself rather than listening. Why? Because the pronunciation is of someone who has not properly learnt Chinese, although I grew up western-like, I still have the ability to speak, write, and read ... more

  • 美中不足

    美国是世界第一的经济体,美国人不参加足球世界杯。中国是世界第二大经济体,中国也不参加世界杯。美国和中国都不踢世界杯,所以说美中不足。

  • Good history, questionable usage

Laszo provides an interesting look at the background behind Chengyus. I also especially like how he breaks down each character in the chengyu. However despite the many times he says the chengyus are useful, he never explains how they should be used. Even just knowing if it’s an object or an action would be helpful. I realize that this isn’t a podcast about learning Chinese, but still the references to how useful it is can be annoying.

  • Snappy, different and very interesting

I found the Chinese Sayings Podcast through its sister broadcast the China History Podcast (which is also excellent by the way) and I have found it a perfect compliment to the CHP. Episodes are just 10-15 minutes long and each covers a single Chinese saying, presented in the original language and then translated and explained for a western audience. You don’t have to be a language scholar to enjoy this series, it’s easy for everyone; and you can learn entertaining phrases and tidbits about Chine... more

  • A fun and interesting way to learn

Any student of Chinese language will know how had it can be to memorize long lists of chengyu (Chinese idioms.) Each short episode focuses on a different chengyu and tells the story behind it, making them much easier to remember.
