What Services Should New Bookkeepers Offer First? (Part 1) | Bookkeeper Interview with Ashley Lamar Morris
Q: In today's episode, what services should I offer as a new bookkeeper, and what not to offer in the beginning?
Ashley recommends starting with five core services: bank feeds and transaction review, monthly bank and credit card reconciliations, a basic report package with meaningful, proactive insights, monthly close support, and optional monthly meetings or summaries to maintain client communication. She advises against overextending into payroll, inventory management, or sales tax initially, especially if you lack deep experience in those areas, and emphasizes choosing service offerings and clients intentionally to protect sanity and confidence.
Are You Running Your Business or Is It Running You?
Q: Tell us about your background and what inspired you to leave accounting for coaching?
I built a career in accounting and finance, but as I moved up to COO and beyond, I realized I loved developing people and leading teams more than crunching numbers. The realization that leadership could be a calling came from seeing how spacers between roles—like stepping into a COO role—expanded my impact and sparked a passion for helping others do the same.
When to Leave Your W-2 and Start Your Bookkeeping Business
Q: What advice would you give bookkeepers dreaming of starting their own firm?
Find a mentor ahead on the journey, connect with peers at similar stages, and also mentor someone coming up behind you to reinforce what you've learned and build confidence for the next generation.
