  • Show on Target Date Funds

Jesse you did such a great job explaining the good and the bad of Target Date Funds. Also loved that you gave guidance of the Fund Families which do a good job with their TDFs. Your Bread analogy was spot on! Keep up the good work.

  • Retirement planning for DIY folks

This is hands-down the best podcast for anyone who wants to manage their own retirement without a finance degree. No jargon, no fluff — just straight talk on Social Security, tax strategy, portfolio withdrawals, and healthcare costs in language real people actually understand. I’ve learned more from this podcast than from years of reading financial articles. A must-listen for every DIY retiree.

  • The Best!

I recently started listening and I am hooked! Jesse has the unique talent of explaining complex topics in an organized and easy to understand way. He is very thorough and deftly uses examples to illustrate his thoughts. I have listened to many retirement focused podcasts and have found this to be the most helpful in providing useful and well researched content. Most other podcasts are very cursory and not too helpful for seasoned DIYers. No doubt Jesse’s engineering background enhances ... more

  • Balanced in the best way possible

As someone who works in financial planning every day, I know how rare it is to find a podcast that actually gets its advice right, and Jesse does. What I love especially is that despite his engineering background and obvious analytical talents, he consistently makes the point that optimizing every financial decision on a spreadsheet kind of misses the point. This is a great show for understanding the ins and outs of money.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Debate! ...Taking Sides On 10 Retirement Sub-Topics (E139)
Q: What do you think about target date funds, Andrew?
Target date funds work well as a starting point for beginners and for people who want a simple, set-it-and-forget-it approach, but they may not fit everyone's risk tolerance or changing income sources, so a more personalized portfolio can be necessary later.
Making Retirement As Simple as Possible, but No Simpler (AMA, E138)
Q: Nicole asks about rebalancing frequency—calendar-based vs. drift-based strategies.
The host presents a pragmatic view: rebalance based on risk and plan needs, with a strong emphasis on once-a-year rebalancing as optimal for most portfolios, and using routine cash flows to aid rebalancing before engaging in broader trades.
Making Retirement As Simple as Possible, but No Simpler (AMA, E138)
Q: Lucy asks for a devil's advocate stance on delaying Social Security and explores spousal/survivor benefits.
The host walks through optimal claiming strategies, the impact of Full Retirement Age, spousal and survivor benefits, and when delaying benefits tends to improve outcomes, while acknowledging the complexity and the role of health and longevity in decision making.
Making Retirement As Simple as Possible, but No Simpler (AMA, E138)
Q: Cliff asks how long retirement savings will last and whether a broker's 5% withdrawal rule is reasonable.
The host argues that such simple rules are too simplistic, highlighting sequence of returns risk and advocating a flexible plan that starts around 4% and possibly 5–6% with adjustments for spending and market conditions.
Making Retirement As Simple as Possible, but No Simpler (AMA, E138)
Q: Wes asks about generating investment losses to offset gains with long-short strategies and the pitfalls of using leverage.
The host explains that losses can offset gains for tax purposes, but the overall strategy is nuanced, costly, and often not worth the tax savings for many investors. He emphasizes that incidental losses are preferable to deliberate losses, and high fees and ongoing maintenance can erode benefits over time.
