  • Decent Translation, but Flawed Exegesis

The show takes an interesting approach to translation. While Elle’s Hebrew is decent, it’s not expert-level, so I’d recommend using it alongside a professional translation, rather than relying solely on this podcast.

That said, the only part of each episode worth listening to is the beginning. Once the hosts dive into their interpretations, the content takes a turn for the worse. Their insights are often misleading and reveal troubling racial and sexist biases. As someone who loves the Torah, i... more

  • Visually Intellectual

You’ll be hard pressed to find a more refreshing translation of these ancient and holy scriptures than this podcast. Elle and George are fantastically faithful to the original Hebrew and the visual backbone beneath the flesh of it. Anyone could benefit from this translation. ALSO: don’t let the long run times fool you! Most of the time the actual translation is in the first 5-10 minutes of audio. What follows after is normally questions from George to Elle about individual word choices (especial... more

  • Lively, interesting, nuanced

I’ve been exploring the Bible a little bit more in depth the older I get since I have learned that translations and interpretations are anything but black and white, cut and dry. This podcast is one of a handful that I listen to to help round out my understanding and to help me along this lovely life journey (that is sometimes incredibly confusing and bewildering).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mailbox Episode 9: Uterus Switcherooskies
Q: In Mark 4, verses 35-41, did Jesus create the storm because Jesus is God, or was there another explanation?
The hosts discuss multiple perspectives, consider the biblical text's framing of creation and weather, and propose that the sea often represents order vs. chaos; they note the possibility that storms may reflect natural processes, human action, or divine sovereignty, rather than a direct act of Satan or Jesus individually. They suggest the text often presents God as the mover of creation, with storms sometimes as consequences or demonstrations of divine power rather than simple natural events.
Mailbox Episode 8
Q: Why has the start of the Jewish calendar changed?
The shift to align with the Akkadian calendar reflects a cultural syncretism rather than a deviation from Torah, indicating a contextual adaptation rather than strict legal adherence.
Mailbox Episode 8
Q: How many animals were sacrificed today in the era of Leviticus?
The frequency and volume of animal sacrifices were significant, though not as excessive as an individual might imagine; the system suggested a communal practice rather than individual burdens.
Leviticus Chapter 27: All is Proscribed
Q: But let's talk about the valuation of persons here and the differing gender demarcations that come along with if it's a man versus a woman. What does that reflect?
This reflects a much broader understanding of labor and productivity in the biblical context, challenging modern interpretations that may suggest women are valued less.
Leviticus Chapter 27: All is Proscribed
Q: What are we saying is happening specifically in this chapter, in this verse, in this passage?
The chapter discusses the regulations regarding making vows and the associated valuations for people and possessions dedicated to God, which presumes a cultural knowledge in its instructions.
