  • I don't have kids and I still LOVE this show!

I may not have kids of my own but as the oldest of 7, I know what it's like dealing with teenagers. Just because being a teenager isn't as difficult as being a parent doesn't mean that guidance isn't needed for everyone. I love Cheryl's brilliant approach at exploring both sides of the conversation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

~167~"What Every Parent Needs to Know About IEPs, High School & Neurodivergent Teens" with Vicki Christensen
Q: What should parents look for as subtle signs that a neurodivergent teen isn't being adequately supported, and how can they address these concerns?
Watch for school refusal, personality changes around school, truancy, or sudden behavioral shifts that indicate confidence and engagement are suffering. Address these by talking directly with teachers and administrators, requesting reassessments as needed, and ensuring the IEP or 504 plan truly reflects current needs. Continuous communication and regular check-ins help prevent students from slipping through the cracks.
~167~"What Every Parent Needs to Know About IEPs, High School & Neurodivergent Teens" with Vicki Christensen
Q: Why is the IEP model different in high school compared to elementary school, and what should parents expect from a high school IEP?
High school IEPs tend to be shorter but focus on essential goals and the delivery of services. The emphasis is on smart, measurable goals, fidelity of implementation, and collaboration among case managers, teachers, and students. It's important to distill the most critical accommodations into an IEP at a glance and foster self-advocacy so students can access supports without always needing permission.
~147~"Parenting an Autistic High‑Schooler: Real‑World Strategies That Actually Work" Dr Sam Shay DC, IFMCP
Q: What would you advise as a realistic goal for reconnecting with a teen who is on the spectrum, given the history of misunderstandings?
Aim to establish open lines of communication and create opportunities to build trust, recognizing that one conversation may not repair everything; start with observable changes, keep commitments, and gradually rebuild the relationship.
~147~"Parenting an Autistic High‑Schooler: Real‑World Strategies That Actually Work" Dr Sam Shay DC, IFMCP
Q: Thinking boots on the ground in the house, can you think of maybe one or two situations where you would have said, no?
Dr. Shea suggests that when parents are willing to change, honest communication can emerge gradually; first focus on implementing visible changes and maintaining consistency, then work on reestablishing trust and open lines of communication over time.
~145~"Confident Parents Raise Confident Teens" with Chantal Dempsey
Q: Can you explain the difference between confidence and arrogance and how parents can navigate that with their teens?
Confidence is about being safe to be oneself and elevate others, while arrogance involves putting others down; parents can guide teens toward confident communication without diminishing others.
