  • Teaching literacy podcast

I really appreciate the effort and professionalism that goes into these podcasts. They are clear and have good a good pace. There is a good emphasis on theories and models. They are very accessible and a good effort to translate research to practice. It seems like the views presented assume that decoding skills are just going ... more

Complex Text & Fluency with Dr. Jake Downs and Dr. Chase Young
Q: How does Read Like Us differ from the traditional 'read three times' approach to fluency?
Read Like Us uses a five-step sequence (listening preview, echo reading, choral reading, paired partner reading, and a final independent/whisper read or reader's theater) to maximize reading time and gradually reduce scaffolding, all while embedding expressive reading and meaning, rather than simply focusing on speed across a single text.
E72|Pragmatic Differentiation for Reading Acceleration with Dr. Sharon Walpole
Q: What is differentiation?
Differentiation is the use of student data to inform instruction, ensuring resources are available to meet student needs.
E70|Science of Reading for Multilingual Learners with Dr. Steve Amdendum
Q: How does a student's first language influence their reading comprehension in their second language?
The student's vocabulary and reading skills in their home language significantly impact their English reading comprehension.
E70|Science of Reading for Multilingual Learners with Dr. Steve Amdendum
Q: How can teachers leverage a multilingual learner's first language if they don't know it?
Teachers can allow students to use their best language in class discussions and pair visual reminders with oral directions.
E69|Transforming Comprehension: Main Ideas, Text Structures, and Teaching Techniques with Dr. Kay Wijekumar
Q: What are the productive practices for helping students identify the top-level structure of the text?
Introduce vocabulary, read with prosody, and ask structured questions to guide children in identifying key ideas and connections.
