Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ERUS Spotlight 2026 | AI in prostate surgery & robotic adrenalectomy
Q: How did the experience with telesurgery start for you, and where do you see it going now?
Younness Ahallal says Morocco began developing robotic surgery in 2024, but lacked enough trained surgeons. After a successful long-distance operation between Shanghai and Casablanca, the team used telesurgery to operate on local patients and support colleagues in other Moroccan cities.
ERUS Spotlight 2026 | AI in prostate surgery & robotic adrenalectomy
Q: How do you see tele-surgery and teleproctoring from the technological perspective, including latency, signal loss, satellite connections, and the relationship between surgeons and industry?
Alberto Breda says dedicated internet lines provide the most reliable low latency, while 5G can perform well but is not consistently available. He notes that high latency can affect surgical performance and says liability, training, and oversight also need attention.
#5 - Prof. Dr. Jan Mulier
Q: Can you tell us a little bit on those consequences of ischemia of the peritoneum on the short term, but also on the long term?
He explains that ischemia can cause peritoneal cells to retract, opening the underlying membrane and allowing carbon dioxide to enter circulation more rapidly. He advocates preserving perfusion with lower pressure and describes reperfusion as a way cells may adapt after a brief period of ischemia.
#5 - Prof. Dr. Jan Mulier
Q: Can you tell us how you build your career? What were the different steps in your career to become who you are?
After entering anesthesiology, Mulier began in laboratory research investigating complications in orthopedic surgery. He later introduced transesophageal echocardiography training and worked with cardiac and bariatric surgeons, continuing research alongside clinical and leadership responsibilities.
ERUS Spotlight 2026 | Partial nephrectomy: new platforms & preoperative simulation
Q: But do you believe that practicing the surgery a few days ago on this model helped you to be calmer during the surgery?
Fabrizio Dal Moro says simulation helped him prepare for the operation and follow a planned spiral approach from the outer layer inward. The model also helped him study the tumor and anticipate possible surgical choices.
