Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Coach Ed Gaffca S8E23
Q: How important is versatility in coaching staff roles versus specializing in one area?
Very important; coaches should gain diverse experiences (JV, middle school, various position groups) to understand the whole game and be prepared to lead as head coach when the opportunity arises.
Coach Ed Gaffca and MOCS Ep20
Q: So let's talk about who we think is going to make the playoffs in each region, region by region—what's your take?
We should consider PSR rankings and regional dynamics, but I think it's going to be a mix of strong returning teams and some surprises, with top programs likely securing spots while others may be on the edge depending on schedules and late-season form.
Jason Mensing HFC Lemon Bay Fl
Q: All right. So you've won a state championship as a head coach. You got a head coaching job at a very young age, and you've been a head coach just about all of your career. When you take a new head coaching job, what is the first thing you want to establish?
Five pillars guide the program: culture development, promotion, recruiting, retention, and schematics. The immediate focus is to spend time daily on each pillar, assess strengths of the staff, and build a cohesive leadership team, all while setting a clear vision and getting buy-in from everyone involved.
Randy Crutchfield HFC Haralson County
Q: Did you get a chance to play college ball, and how did your path unfold after high school?
Yes, I went to North Greenville after high school, explored several options due to injuries and transfers, and eventually found a path that led me to coaching at multiple Georgia schools, adapting as opportunities arose.
Randy Crutchfield HFC Haralson County
Q: Well, Coach, where did you grow up and go to high school?
I grew up in Douglasville, Georgia area, played high school football in Hiram and Douglasville, and eventually moved through several local programs as I pursued college football and then began coaching.
