  • Even the headlines are biased

I heard a couple of good interviews, but now checking in six months later, the one-sided headlines with their ALL CAPS emotions make it clear it’s not worth my time. And I am a center, educated independent.

  • Great podcast!

It starts with understanding why California is in such a pickle to begin fixing the core problems of affordability, public saftely, over regulation, etc. State of Gold breaks downs these issues and puts leaders in the limelight, championing sensible reform. Also, Jon for governor!

  • Centrist……..nope

There are a few episodes that I found pretty straightforward and informative. Unfortunately, this tends to lean heavily to a discomforting right. I was hoping for a more balanced and sensible viewpoint. Im not getting it….

  • Why does Apple block this from being played?

I love this and must go elsewhere to listen. Apple is an anti California people company. Last iPhone I will ever own or Apple product.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Candidate for City Attorney Who Will Clear LA's Streets | John McKinney
Q: What distinguishes the city attorney role from the district attorney role, in your view?
The city attorney acts as the city's general counsel, focusing on contracts, civil matters, and municipal governance, while still using prosecutorial tools to support law enforcement; the balance between civil work and criminal prosecutions is key to effective city governance.
The Candidate for City Attorney Who Will Clear LA's Streets | John McKinney
Q: What is your view on sanctuary policies and cooperation with federal immigration authorities?
I support upholding the law and city policies while advocating for better communication and collaboration with federal partners to identify criminals who are here and enforce removal when appropriate, without broadailing immigration status as a predictor of crime.
The Candidate for City Attorney Who Will Clear LA's Streets | John McKinney
Q: How would you leverage the city attorney's office to address homelessness in LA?
Use a compassionate accountability framework: provide beds, triage, intermediate housing, and then permanent housing, while backing law enforcement with civil tools to move encampments off the streets when appropriate.
The Candidate for City Attorney Who Will Clear LA's Streets | John McKinney
Q: What is your assessment of public safety in Los Angeles right now and what needs to be done writ large?
The problem stems from realignment in the 2010s, pushing people out of state prisons and back to local counties, which overcrowded jails and increased street-level issues; the fix involves a combination of prudent enforcement, targeted rehabilitation, and a clear plan to move people into beds and services.
Meet the Man Who Drew the California Prop50 Maps | Paul Mitchell
Q: What was your first reaction and how did you get to a place where you decided to do it?
My reaction evolved from resistance to insisting on a process that would produce maps with integrity, limiting district splits, and attempting to keep alignment with the independent commission criteria while responding to political pressure.
