  • Do they know what they’re talking about?

The hosts cover interesting topics in politics, policy and law, but so frequently sound uncertain about what they are saying that it’s difficult to trust what they say. A little more preparation might be in order.

  • Two suggestions…

Often I find myself halfway through a case’s explanation to realize I have no idea what the recent development or that day’s outcome is about. A suggestion: at the start of each case’s analysis, please state CLEARLY the particular development of a case — what the hearing about or what a ruling determined, i.e. why a case is being covered at this time — before wading into the proceeding’s particulars. Wittes usually tees things up giving an opening for a panelist to then respond. At the start of ... more

  • Excellent for clarity, focus and interest

With presenters of a point of view restrainedly liberal yet an analytical approch determinately neutral, Lawfare’s terrain is a pot-pourri of varied subjects brought to us with rigor and a legalist framework (when the subject requires). A really fine show!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Lawfare Daily: The Department of Justice, or the Department of Revenge?
Q: What was the first event that signaled a dramatic shift in the DOJ and FBI's independence?
The day-one mass reshuffling, including the reassignment of senior officials to new groups like the Sanctuary Cities Working Group, and the immediate moves against key personnel, signaled a proactive strategy to reshape the department's power dynamics.
Lawfare Daily: The Department of Justice, or the Department of Revenge?
Q: Can Americans trust the Justice Department anymore?
Barrett explains that trust remains in some areas where work is ongoing and credible, but there is deep concern about political interference in high-profile cases and pardons that undermine perceived independence.
Lawfare Daily: Military Education and American Manhood with Jasper Craven
Q: You discuss reform and alternatives to militarized education. Do you think real reform is still possible, or is the system too entrenched?
There is always a thread of possibility, as shown by historical peace movements and experimental programs, but meaningful reform would require sustained political will and a shift in cultural narrative away from militarized masculine ideals toward more inclusive, diverse paths for national service and civic engagement.
Lawfare Daily: Military Education and American Manhood with Jasper Craven
Q: What challenges did you face in accessing and understanding this beat, especially as someone coming from outside the military culture?
There was resistance and skepticism about an outsider examining a insular world, but through persistent reporting, engaging with veterans, and highlighting personal narratives, I found ways to build trust and present a more nuanced, accountable view of the Pentagon's influence on education.
Lawfare Daily: Military Education and American Manhood with Jasper Craven
Q: So Jasper, where did your interest in the military as a subject to cover come from, given you don't come from a veteran background?
My interest grew out of a personal history with anti-war activism in my family and a natural curiosity about how military power shapes society, which led me to focus on veterans' experiences and the human consequences of military policy rather than the high-level tactics alone.
