I don’t think it was because we lost the engineers or the engineering prowess. Of course, many of them were given their pink slips, but it was more that the industrial CAPABILITY and the means to production were systematically dismantled. For my money, the story of the wives and families of those pioneering astronauts remains the single greatest untold part of the Apollo era. Certainly, there have been attempts ranging from m’eh to terrific (if short). The BBC’s 2009 documentary “Apollo Space Wives” and episode 11 of HBO’s From The Earth To The Moon, “The Original Wives Club” are among the better ones, in my humble opinion.
