  • Good summary on local politicians and issues..

I appreciate the take on the Governor’s race and other local issues. I’d like to know more about mysterious Eastern Washington. Why have the Dems abandoned it? What is going on with Cathy McMorris Rogers? What about Dan Newhouse and his strategy for staying in office? Also why aren’t more Washingtonians angry about the electoral college? Keep it up Sound Politics!

  • Engaging hosts who’ve done their homework

Washington State could use a nonpartisan podcast that regularly digs into the Olympia scene and state politics. The debut episodes for this show hosted by the likable Scott Greenstone and Libby Denkman are promising.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

RIP, vote-by-mail?
Q: What does Watson v. RNC mean for Washington's vote-by-mail system, and could the grace period be at risk?
The case questions whether ballots postmarked by Election Day but arriving after it should be counted; Washington currently allows a lengthy 21-day grace period, so a ruling against late ballots could narrow that window and require changes in how ballots are processed.
Is Katie Wilson ready for the World Cup?
Q: What progress has been made on shelter beds ahead of the World Cup and what are the remaining hurdles?
Progress includes opening a pallet shelter with dozens of beds and plans for more sites, but challenges remain around siting, contracting with providers, funding, and ensuring long-term stability of services beyond initial openings.
Is Katie Wilson ready for the World Cup?
Q: What justified turning on the stadium district cameras according to law enforcement briefing?
The briefing outlined credible threats and the likelihood that a threat could be carried out given the event's scale, which the mayor framed as warranting the cameras, with a plan to audit privacy and data use afterward.
Did Portland solve the gerrymandering problem?
Q: What evidence do proponents cite to support the effectiveness of this system?
Analyses by the Data Democracy Lab found a high rate of top-three rankings among voters, suggesting broad alignment with winners and improved representation.
Did Portland solve the gerrymandering problem?
Q: How does Portland's proportional rank-choice voting work in practice, and why might it empower communities of color?
Portland allocates three seats per district, so a group that is a minority can still win a proportional share of seats, enabling representation that aligns more closely with the community's preferences, including people of color.
