Wow, this Baumgartner Rep just spews MAGA nonsense for nearly the entire interview. The host tries to redirect him but really should have been more confrontational, especially when he calls Seattle area voters and the Seattle mayor morons. He accuses anyone on the left of our national politics as acting out of “Trump derangement syndrome” yet he is the one who sounds as if he is deranged… “MAGA derangement syndrome” perhaps?

  • Truly Balanced

Libby has a respectful ear to her guests. I value her ability to listen and pose thoughtful questions that broaden my perspective and seam closer the divide. Her professional ability to articulate and gather ideas without offense should be methodically taught across NPR’s journalism.

I return to Sound Side for the balance.

  • Brian Heywood is a bigot

Thanks for holding the facts up to him and questioning his underlying assumption that trans people are worse than cis people. He’s a grifter, a fear-monger, a liar, and a bigot.

  • Unfortunate they are covering national stories and lack rigor

Do we really need kuow’s take on google’s ai synopsis in search results? Do we need them discussing palestine? Why retread ground the NYT and BBC cover with far more resources and access?

What we need is for kuow to cover solutions for our broken school system, solutions for bike and pedestrian mobility, solutions for the homeless crises, solutions for downtown office vacancies. Keep it local please!

  • wow. No problems with the interview but I wanted to look up the name of the guest in the book the guest had written and there seems to be no show notes at all. Not even the most basic information such as the name of the guest. Wow.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why one Seattle organization says new data doesn't measure Native homelessness accurately — again
Q: Why is the methodology and the way data is collected so problematic for Native communities?
The guest highlights trust issues, cultural misalignment, and the flaws of using incentives and surveys in a way that can exclude multi-racial Native people; he argues for Indigenous-led, culturally appropriate data collection and reporting.
Why one Seattle organization says new data doesn't measure Native homelessness accurately — again
Q: What was your initial reaction to seeing the latest one-night count numbers and the reported drop among Native homelessness?
Derrick Belgarde explains it felt like a punch to the gut and not a surprise given ongoing issues with past counts; he stresses the data likely misrepresents progress and risks misinforming funders and policymakers.
Long-running fight over Sodo housing takes a new turn
Q: What is the significance of the recent appeals and how might they affect Seattle's comprehensive plan?
Ryan notes that the appeals threaten to hold up the city's growth plan and the broader comp plan, potentially delaying housing approvals citywide. The stadium and trade unions argue that not allowing housing harms workers and public facilities, a perspective that challenges typical arguments in favor of building more housing.
Long-running fight over Sodo housing takes a new turn
Q: What did Nelson's rezone intend to accomplish, and why did it become controversial?
The rezone aimed to encourage a mixed-use, maker-friendly district with roughly a thousand housing units above industrial uses, hoping to provide an income stream for industrial spaces. It drew backlash from labor and port interests who feared safety issues and a shift away from traditional industrial land use, contributing to a broader conflict over whether housing should encroach on freight corridors near the port.
Long-running fight over Sodo housing takes a new turn
Q: Can you describe these blocks south of the stadium and why they became so central to this debate?
Ryan explains that the area is a strip along First Avenue near the stadium, part of the Stadium Transition Area Overlay District, where housing was proposed to coexist with industrial uses as part of a larger plan to create a maker's district with affordable units and commercial activity above businesses. The vision faced strong opposition from port workers and trucking interests who worry about safety and the character of the land, making it a flashpoint in Seattle's land-use conversations.
