  • Have a listen…

While I’m not the target audience, I’m so glad I tuned in as a godmother, an aunt, and a person always looking to navigate relationships better. The podcast is digestible and leaves me with things to think about and apply to my life. High recommend.

  • Loved the episode on emotional regulation

I’ve learned a lot about emotional regulation over the last few years as a parent. The way that Dr. Gila explains this and how neurodivergent kids feel things was eye opening for me. I loved the sink model analogy, it really helped me with having compassion for myself when I mess up and why. This allows me to have so much more compassion and understanding for my kids and why they have melt downs.

  • Gila speaks like your encouraging best friend who happens to be a wise psychologist

You know how when you meet with a psychologist, you immediately wish you could know about their personal life and how they use their own teachings in their life? Well that’s what you get from this podcast. Gila is living what she teaches. Her guests are incredible and her tone is so encouraging. But she doesn’t stop at encouraging, she gives action steps and tools you can use too.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[Encore] Screens: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything, with Ash Brandin
Q: Before we wrap up, what is something you do in your life to foster connection either with yourself or with your kid?
Ash describes engaging with screens in a way that prioritizes presence and curiosity, such as joining their world briefly to understand what they enjoy and to build a bridge for future conversations.
34. Supporting Your Neurodivergent Learner at School and at Home (with Dr. Emily King)
Q: What are practical tips for gauging readiness when teaching a new skill and what should parents do if their child doesn't seem ready yet?
She advises checking whether the child can do the skill in other settings, using explicit teaching with visuals, and coordinating with teachers to identify when a skill is emerging. If readiness is uncertain, slow down, observe, and consider teaching in low-stress periods (e.g., summer) when capacity is higher.
34. Supporting Your Neurodivergent Learner at School and at Home (with Dr. Emily King)
Q: Is it true that you focus on autism, ADHD, and twice-exceptionality, and what do parents need to know to help their child succeed in school and at home?
Dr. King emphasizes viewing education beyond a medical model, acknowledging that neurodivergent learners have uneven development and unique engagement patterns. Parents should validate that their child is not broken, collaborate with teachers to tailor supports, and prioritize safety, connection, and mental wellness as essential components of success, not just grades.
31. Summer Planning with Neurodivergent Kids (with Debbie Reber)
Q: What are some key tips for planning a neurodivergent kid's summer while balancing work and care needs?
Focus on listening, adjusting expectations, building in rest, and using collaborative planning with the child to set feasible goals; plan with calendars, routines, and contingencies to reduce stress and increase predictability.
27. Cooking with Kids and Teens: The Gateway Life Skill for Raising Confident Adults (with Katie Kimball)
Q: How can parents invite teens into the kitchen without turning it into another chore?
Start with the teen's choices, assign meaningful roles, scaffold with the “chef way” then the “home cook way,” and use low-stress times to practice small skills, gradually increasing responsibility and autonomy.
