本日は、「胡椒」という極めて身近でありながら、歴史的には非常に特異な役割を果たしてきた食材についてお話しします。
胡椒の原産地は、現在のインド南西部マラバール海岸。ここで採れる黒胡椒は、紀元前から貴重な交易品として扱われいた。
古代ローマ時代、胡椒は単なる香辛料ではなく、「富」の象徴で。実際に、西ローマ帝国の滅亡の前後、ローマが異民族に支払った賠償の中にも胡椒が含まれていたと記録されています。つまり胡椒は、通貨に近い価値を持っていた。 more
