  • Really wanted to love this!

As a teacher, I really wanted to love this, but I found this podcast really difficult to listen to and keep track. The podcast does not seem to have a structure or flow and there doesn’t seem to be anything I could take away from to implement in my own classroom (I was listening to the comprehension episode).

Q: Can you tell us, Katie Pace-Miles, a little bit about yourself and the work that you do in the world of literacy?
Katie describes her roles as a professor, co-founder of CUNY Reading Corps, and founder of the Reading Institute, focusing on training educators and high-impact tutoring.
the Intersection of Speech, Reading, and Language
Q: As a reading teacher, what should I focus on to help students understand sentences better?
I think that there are curricular materials that have you identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, but you should really focus on how they're using the words rather than just identifying them.
the Intersection of Speech, Reading, and Language
Q: Can you even for me define the difference between syntax and semantics?
Semantics is really about the defining features of words. Syntax is more about the structure of language.
the Intersection of Speech, Reading, and Language
Q: If you had a teacher come to you, what would be something that would kind of start a conversation that you would want to jump off from?
A lot of people, when they find me, it is relating to some of my information on syntax.
Reading Lessons with Jennifer Serravallo
Q: What are some of your go-to scaffolds for learning support and for challenge in the moment?
Student engagement is critical. Planning for it includes keeping kids active and working during lessons. For example, in a close reading lesson, I model while prompting them to interact with the text and think critically.
