Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Keith Schumacher—After the Donut: An Introduction to School-Based Father Engagement for School Leaders
Q: What is the START framework and why is it effective for schools implementing SBFE?
START stands for Structure, Training, Accountability, Resources, and Trust. It guides leaders to build a concrete plan, train staff and volunteers, ensure accountability in both directions, leverage available resources, and cultivate genuine trust with families to sustain engagement.
Keith Schumacher—After the Donut: An Introduction to School-Based Father Engagement for School Leaders
Q: Talk to us a little about the need you saw for the book and why a structured approach matters.
The book responds to principals who want to engage fathers but keep falling into one-time events; it emphasizes transforming those events into year-round, proactive practices with a measurable structure and accountability to sustain engagement.
Erika Bare & Tiffany Burns—A School Leader’s Playbook for Tough Conversations
Q: Could you outline the step-by-step thinking you guide readers through to prepare for and conduct these conversations?
Begin with a clear purpose and goals, then plan logistics and gather observable data. Rehearse language to state facts, plan wrapping up the conversation with clear next steps, and write down one or two sentences to ensure accountability. Front-load care, set expectations, and ensure ongoing support after the talk.
Erika Bare & Tiffany Burns—A School Leader’s Playbook for Tough Conversations
Q: What did you see as the challenge that you were helping school leaders tackle when you set out to write this book?
They identified that tough conversations with adults and students are common yet hard, and needed concrete tools, templates, and a clear process to engage people, build trust, and improve outcomes. The approach centers on proactive relationship-building and practical steps that can be implemented immediately.
Katrina Huels—Transformational Tools for Special Educators: How to Beat Burnout and Become the Best at What You Do
Q: How can districts implement these ideas without putting the onus entirely on individuals?
By making emotional intelligence a shared language and expectation across the district, embedding it into professional development, and aligning policies so the culture supports self-regulation and communication. It's about organizational change as much as personal growth, with tools and training offered to everyone.
