  • I Can’t Quit Mr Godfrey

I’m not a huge college football fan. I mean I am, but it’s basically just following and watching the team I root for.

I didn’t even know who Mr Godfrey was until I heard him on a Wharton Moneyball podcast and I could just tell this person is smart and he gets it.

I started listening to the Yahoo College Football Enquirer podcast Mr Godfrey is on. The first college football podcast I ever started listening to and enjoy it. Naturally that led me to Phantom Island. I subscribed to check it out, ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Single Wing: Let's Remember Some Viruses (PREVIEW)
Q: Discuss topic. Did the FCS playing the COVID year in the spring of 2021 help or hurt most teams during the fall 2021 season? Example, was ETSU's win at Vandy helped by having played only a few months prior?
The host frames the question as a spring COVID year impact analysis and previews related topics (TCU, Wisconsin, Minor League Baseball, Lane Kiffin chatter) as part of a broad, exploratory discussion rather than delivering a single definitive conclusion.
How does the College Sports Commission actually work?
Q: What are the perceived weaknesses or risks of the CSC as portrayed in the pitch decks and discussion?
Key concerns include lack of transparency in decision-making, potential suppression of athlete income, difficulty in tracking fulfillment of deals, and the possibility that the system creates a market freeze while enabling legal challenges against CSC decisions.
How does the College Sports Commission actually work?
Q: How do the Deloitte and PwC proposals differ in approach to running the NIL clearinghouse?
Deloitte focused on a broader, range-based assessment of values and included more detailed algorithmic descriptions, while PwC emphasized a formal fair market value range and explicit use of AI; Deloitte's approach was seen as more cautious but the winner in the bidding.
How does the College Sports Commission actually work?
Q: What is the College Sports Commission and what is its intended purpose beyond NIL oversight?
The CSC is presented as a centralized body to monitor NIL deals, enforce caps, and shepherd the market through a third-party platform, distinct from the NCAA, with ambitions to regulate and potentially sanction entities involved in NIL activity.
What Makes An Offensive Line Coach Good?
Q: What are the major differences for this job at the college level versus coaching professional offensive linemen?
At the college level, there is more foundational coaching required, while in the NFL, it's often more about refining existing skills due to the players' experience and developed skills.
