  • Love this and still recommend but….

I’m an avid listener and have learned a lot from listening to this podcast over the years. Liz Ann is a phenomenal educator as was Kathy Jones. That said, their newest cohost could improve his guest interviewing style. It should be less about his knowledge and more about the guest’s knowledge. Teeing up the question is good, but answering the question first then asking for your guest to agree is not so great. He clearly knows his stuff but shouldn’t be trying to prove it. I recognize it’s probab... more

  • Keep up the good work

As a retired investor, I have really found listening to this report very informative. I only wish there wasn’t a big lag from the taping to its broadcast, only because it seems that there’s so much that happens between Wednesday and Friday. I would almost rather wish that it would be taped on Friday and released on Monday, but I know that there are logistical reasons for why you do what you do. Also, I will miss Kathy a lot, but look forward to hearing what Collin has to contribute. Keep up the ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Has the Fed Accepted 3% Inflation? (With Jim Bullard)
Q: How do you view the AI disruption in macro terms and what would you need to see before you believe it materially affects inflation and growth?
Bullard compares AI to a general purpose technology that will permeate the economy over time, expecting winners and losers but ultimately broad adoption, with macro effects evolving as the technology matures and business models emerge.
Has the Fed Accepted 3% Inflation? (With Jim Bullard)
Q: Jim, what data do you think is most important? And do you think market watchers and Fed watchers are aligned in the thinking around what data matters most?
Bullard says labor market, growth, productivity, AI effects, and inflation data all matter, and believes watchers are broadly aligned; forward guidance is less emphasized, with emphasis on the underlying parameters of policy rather than short-term data surprises.
The Economy's Curious Balancing Act (With Dr. Richard Clarida)
Q: What lessons from the pandemic era are relevant for policy makers and investors going forward?
Clarida emphasizes that the Fed's response—unconventional tools and liquidity support—proved effective but also highlighted the costs of forward guidance and the need for a balanced, robust framework to right-size the balance sheet and use QE prudently in crises.
The Economy's Curious Balancing Act (With Dr. Richard Clarida)
Q: What is behind the persistence of inflation readings, even as headline inflation moves down, and how should investors think about core versus headline measures?
He distinguishes between different inflation measures, arguing that underlying inflation is better tracked through a suite of measures, not just core CPI, and that energy prices and tariff effects can have temporary, sometimes transitory, influences on the data.
The Economy's Curious Balancing Act (With Dr. Richard Clarida)
Q: What does current monetary policy mean for individuals beyond the obvious impact on borrowing costs and mortgage rates?
Clarida explains that while policy affects interest rates, its broader influence includes expectations, financial conditions, and the transmission mechanism through various market prices, with credibility and communication being critical in shaping consumer and business decisions.
