  • Great Podcast

Great show. Relevant and interesting topics with interesting guests. Christine Benz and Amy Arnott are excellent interviewers! However, I’m not a big fan of Ben Johnson’s interviewing style.

  • Misleading

In episode 363 Ms Birken and Ms Benz said that the health subsidies on the Health exchange were eliminated. Only the COVID enhanced subsidies were eliminated. The original Subsidies are still in place.

I would hate you think that people would avoid the exchange entirely because they think there are no subsidies.

  • Keep it simple

Sara Devereux from Vanguard is very articulate, but lacking in substance. Very much counter to the principles of Jack Bogle

Private equity, junk Bonds! Why do we need to take risk on the fixed side of a portfolio?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Adam Grossman: Asset Allocation Is an Investor’s Best Defense
Q: Can you talk about the focus of Humble Dollar and who it's geared toward?
Humble Dollar started as a site for simple, retirement-oriented wealth-building rather than aggressive stock picking, aiming to help everyday people build wealth through sensible, long-term planning.
Bill Bengen: ‘Inflation Is the Greatest Enemy of Retirees’
Q: Should people switch from target-date funds to a different allocation as they retire?
Yes, because retirees should actively control asset allocation rather than rely on a fixed fund methodology that may become misaligned with their plan.
Bill Bengen: ‘Inflation Is the Greatest Enemy of Retirees’
Q: What are the pros and cons of the fixed annuity withdrawal approach?
Fixed nominal withdrawals can ignore rising costs due to inflation, potentially shrinking real income over time, making it less suitable for most people unless they have ample resources.
Harry Margolis: How to Confront Aging Challenges Head-On
Q: When is the right time to discuss aging and housing choices with aging parents?
Around age 75 is a practical milestone to reassess living arrangements, finances, and caregiver plans while health and independence are still relatively good.
Harry Margolis: How to Confront Aging Challenges Head-On
Q: What are the common misconceptions about Medicare in relation to long-term care?
Medicare covers acute health needs but not long-term custodial care, which often requires private payment or supplemental planning.
