  • Barry’s pod is the best!

I first heard Barry Ritholtz as a guest on Liz Ann Sonders’s equally great podcast (Schwab). I found their discussion so interesting I listed five times.

Then, to my delight, I found that Barry had his own podcast (Bloomberg). He’s a sharp interviewer, asking questions to get guests to talk freely. He also seems like an all around positive and enthusiastic guy you wouldn’t mind having as a neighbor to chat about markets, economics, cars, or coffee with.

Some of my favorite interviews are: Bob ... more

  • Bad host

Barry Ritholtz is annoying always interrupting the guest and pretends that he knows more than the guest. Don’t keep cutting people off with meaningless phrases. Be humble and listen.

  • The best finance podcast

First off, Barry knows how to interview his guests. Great questions create engaging and informative conversations. The guests are diverse and there is so much to learn not only about finance but about career paths, success, failure and even book recommendations. This is the long view so if you are looking for get rich quick tips, look elsewhere. A weekly dose of wisdom. Thank you Barry!

  • When Data Learns to Listen

This was a quietly powerful conversation. The way you explored AI as a tool for interpretation rather than prediction adds real depth to how people think about investing. Markets move on narratives, language, and collective belief, and using technology to notice those subtle shifts feels both timely and responsible. I really appreciated how this episode encouraged discernment and better questions, not just faster answers. That kind of thinking helps people make wiser decisions over the long term... more

  • Went downhill

Used to be a weekly listen for me with good advice but it’s gone downhill. The sponsored content about watches is one thing but slipping watch promotions into almost every episodes ridiculous. If the content was better I might tolerate the excessive ads.

At The Money: How to Max Out Your Small Business Retirement Plan
Q: What about succession planning or exit scenarios—are some structures more flexible than others?
Solo K generally offers more flexibility for multiple partners and varying contribution levels, whereas SEP is simpler and easier to unwind, but in situations with multiple partners or house-hold planning, the choice depends on the specific goals and the ability to manage differing contributions over time.
At The Money: How to Max Out Your Small Business Retirement Plan
Q: What are the administration and compliance burdens to watch for with these plans?
SEP requires minimal ongoing maintenance, while Solo 401(k) has stricter filing requirements once total plan assets hit $250,000 (Form 5500-EZ) with penalties that can be substantial if not handled properly; proper setup and regular maintenance are essential to avoid significant penalties.
At The Money: How to Max Out Your Small Business Retirement Plan
Q: Who counts as an employee for Solo 401(k) eligibility, and how does having a spouse involved affect the plan?
If you have a W-2 employee, you're no longer in a true Solo K; a Solo K can include a spouse as an employee if they are paid wages, and a plan can have multiple owners/partners, expanding contributions as long as there are no non-owner employees, which can complicate the structure but increases potential savings.
At The Money: How to Max Out Your Small Business Retirement Plan
Q: How does the $72,000 contribution limit work across the different plans, and how can someone with a side gig reach that cap?
The $72,000 limit is the overall retirement plan limit per plan, not a per-year cap across plans; the SEP contributes based on a percentage of earnings (up to that limit), while the Solo 401(k) can reach the same total with employee deferrals (up to 24,500) plus employer contributions; the exact path to maxing out depends on income and plan type.
At The Money: How to Max Out Your Small Business Retirement Plan
Q: What options exist for solo or small business owners who want to save more money for retirement on a tax-deferred basis?
The main starting options are a SEP IRA and a Solo 401(k); many still default to SEP for simplicity, but a Solo 401(k) with mega backdoor Roth features is increasingly popular and can offer greater flexibility and higher potential deferrals, especially with additional plans like a defined benefit cash balance when seeking more tax deferral opportunities.
