  • That’s fascinating

Listening since first show, but reluctantly signed off some time ago. Guest quality usually very high. Host’s interviewing skills, style, and adaptivity alas, remain wooden. To deem everything ‘fascinating’ is beyond a tic.

  • Barry’s pod is the best!

I first heard Barry Ritholtz as a guest on Liz Ann Sonders’s equally great podcast (Schwab). I found their discussion so interesting I listed five times.

Then, to my delight, I found that Barry had his own podcast (Bloomberg). He’s a sharp interviewer, asking questions to get guests to talk freely. He also seems like an all around positive and enthusiastic guy you wouldn’t mind having as a neighbor to chat about markets, economics, cars, or coffee with.

  • Bad host

Barry Ritholtz is annoying always interrupting the guest and pretends that he knows more than the guest. Don’t keep cutting people off with meaningless phrases. Be humble and listen.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Remembering the Life and Work of Jonathan Clements
Q: How did Jonathan view money in relation to happiness and a well-lived life?
He explored hedonic psychology, arguing that money matters less for acquiring possessions than for enabling meaningful experiences and meaningful goals; ultimately, money should support relationships, experiences, and causes that give life purpose rather than chasing consumer signals.
Remembering the Life and Work of Jonathan Clements
Q: What made Jonathan's writing about investing so influential, and why did he push for index funds so strongly?
Jonathan identified that active management generally underperformed after costs, so he championed index funds as a simple, cost-effective way for most people to invest. His relentless, clear messaging helped mainstream the idea that keeping costs low and embracing long-term strategies benefits the average investor.
At The Money: Grab Your Summer Rental Soon!!
Q: What should potential buyers consider when they're testing markets by renting first?
Renting first can be a prudent approach to assess whether a location fits long-term lifestyle and investment goals, especially given that second-home markets move slower and price dynamics are influenced by both consumer behavior and broader economic conditions.
At The Money: Grab Your Summer Rental Soon!!
Q: What role does the amazonification of demand play in this market?
Demand is increasingly on-demand and last-minute, reducing the reliability of traditional forecasting while making properties available or booked quickly, which adds a layer of unpredictability but also creates opportunities for short-term rents and opportunistic listings.
At The Money: Grab Your Summer Rental Soon!!
Q: How do regions like the Hamptons compare to other second-home markets across the country?
The Hamptons mirror broader patterns in second-home markets, showing strong luxury demand in top-tier areas but softer demand in middle and lower segments, with regional variance driven by local economies and access to markets connected to Wall Street bonuses.
